Wipeout...

Recommended Posts

Whoa this is a 'There I was..." and a funny story at the same time.
I'm also using this for my writing class.

So there I was.... riding my bike down the street with Max running along side.
Max is heal trained on the right side because RePete had the left side. I don't see a reason to switch Max over to the left and bike riding is probably safer with her on the right. I do plan on getting another pup after my February road trip 'Ms. Meyer Goes to Orlando'.

Max started doing more regular bike runs with me since RePete died. We do shorter more frequent runs than long, all out rides. Max is still at the training stage. That is I still hold the leash in my hand as opposed to wrapping it around the seat stem. The 'plan' is that I can correct her when she wants to go off elsewhere, but I do have to watch her. I have to split attention between the forward and down directions. For the most part, other dogs and people do not distract her. For a two year old, she is pretty good at the basic commands.

Max can get startled by loud noises, just like most other dogs. We were approaching a 4-way stop intersection. There was a van there that had something to do with pumping water out into the street. I saw the water and didn't really think that would spook Max. I had my ipod blaring music into my ears and did not realize just how loud the pump was. We were not even to the water or abeam of the pump and Max hit the brakes. A 65-70 pound dog hitting that doggy squat will send anyone over the handlebars in a heartbeat. I was looking forward and not at Max when she did that. I wasn't able to let go of the 3-4ft leash slack.

I went flying and actually traveled far enough to land in the water. Max ended up in an excellent sit position just outside of the water. I stood up and realized my left earbud had dropped into the water. I placed it back into my ear and could not hear much music from it. I pulled out the ipod from the now, very waterlogged left pocket. It had some strange message about firewire connections not working, but was still playing 'Another Night in Paradise' by Phil Collins.

By this time a car had approach the intersection behind us. I waved them forward. Then a guy from across the street yelled 'Are you OK?' I waved back at him and his two dogs. Then I picked up my bike and got Max in position. We continued on our run.

The only other times the dogs and I wiped out where two other times. One in Tucson with Pete and Katie, when a loose dog charged Pete, and one time in Eloy with RePete and Max when a loose dog charged RePete.

That happened to me with my horses once when I was a kid. I was riding my horse and leading my pony. Something spooked them. My horse took off and my pony slammed on the breaks. Instead of letting go of the lead I dropped my horses rains and grabbed the pony's lead :o Oops! I landed in a big mud puddle:$ Luckily the only thing I hurt was my ego:D
