Jeb Corliss on the Colbert Report

Recommended Posts

I'd run down to Kinkos and spends a few bucks on signs that say "Positively no BASE jumping from the ESB". What is a 12 million dollar suit going to do to prevent someone from trying it?

I'm guessing that would tend to have a deterrent effect on people who have enough money to be worth suing. That covers people who have enough money to consider themselves above the law.

Charging him with a crime (unfortunately the charges were dropped) would tend to discourage people who want to spend their time in some place other than jail.

Doing both would make it pretty clear that they have done just about everything they can to prevent people from pulling a Jeb-like stunt. Almost everything, that is. I suppose the next step will be closing down the observation deck.

As for the Kinko's signs, it's a half-hearted message. I'm guessing here, but I think they would have been perfectly happy if Jeb had not attempted that jump. I don't see this as a case of "suing for profit".

That's a funny clip. Thanks for posting it. I watch Colbert a lot, but I guess I missed that one.

I agree. Good interview. People should chill.

Maybe we could get Chris Crocker to make a video in his behalf.

Wow, it's Jeb with hair!

You seem to have a real problem with Jeb.

I think if he succeeds - it will be a big jump up for both sports, but if he fails - it might set us back a few years. That said - publicity is publicity - and there is (supposedly) no bad publicity.

I have *zero* problem with the idea of landing a websuit and I think the surrounding publicity will have little if any impact on the sport regardless of the outcome.

My problem is with anyone who puts others at risk so they can show off. We've already lost too many people in the sport that way.

People with many years of professional skydiving demo experience are held to an infinitely more stringent standard of safety than Jeb was practicing on that attempted jump. Does the fact that he was wanting to launch off a building rather than an airplane make his actions any safer for the people below?

Why do so many people think it's ok for *him* to be doing that type of jump. Does he have supernatural powers that guarantee a happy outcome for everyone? I don't think so.

Let's say you were in their situation. What would *you* do?

Walt

Just a crazy thought, but....if I ran the ESB and wanted to avoid liability for BASE jumping from it, would I:

a) A hire lawyers and pay legal fees out of my own pocket to sue jumpers one by one.

b) Lobby the city to enact a law making it a crime, and let the city pay for enforcement and prosecution.

Lemme think....hmmm....

By attempting that stunt during a high-traffic time, Jeb showed that he is all about Jeb and doesn't give a flying fuck about anyone who he might have injured or whose property he might have damaged.

His explanation for the timing - traffic is not moving at that time of day, was timing the lights - seemed plausible enough.

"Daredevils" by nature are publicity hounds. And they market themselves to the whuffo world, not those of us who know what is really dangerous and what just looks good on TV. (see the episode where they swoop over 'mean' sharks into a cage).

At the risk of continuing this should-have-died-long-ago thread, here is an aerial view of the Empire State Building.

Yeah, so he says he studied traffic, winds, etc. Where's the evidence that he did? Did he ever contact the NYC people who are responsible for traffic flow? Did he have people on the ground to block traffic? If so, how did he coordinate them? Did he collect any data or just hang out on a street corner a few times to "get a feel" for traffic? I never saw any reports that he made any *serious* efforts along those lines.

I'm not going to drag this discussion on further. Look at the aerial view, imagining the streets and sidewalks congested to capacity, and make up your own mind.
