ACMESkydiver 0 #1 January 18, 2008 I went to my first Kung Fu lesson yesterday!! I'M SO EXCITED!!! It was an hour long private lesson, and that's how this studio teaches. All lessons are private (you learn faster, and as for me -I don't have to feel embarassed in front of a room of people if I mess up ). It's much fun and a great work out! I go to my next lesson on Monday. Woo-hoo!!!! I'm making healthy eating so much of a habit that I don't have to track it as much any more. I automatically reach for the right things, and that feels great. I'm still having some sleep issues...hmm. Thinking it's the change in thyroid meds as it's only about 3-4 weeks into it. It takes months sometimes. So how are you doing? Climbing? Walking? Lifting? Running? How are your schedules coming -are we doing ok with our busy January gyms (I actually have been opting to work out at home because I know for sure what I can do re: equipment availability). My gym STILL has not hired any trainers for class schedules! They've had no classes since Jan 1. -How dumb is that?! -What gyms do you all belong to, anyhoo? Joe and I belong to Mieko's. No pool, no 'gym'/aerobics, no boxing equip -but they do have a dry sauna in each locker room which is nice to stretch in. gonzalesna 1 #2 January 18, 2008 I'm walking funny today because of lifting legs very heavily a few days ago. Definately regretting it. That was my first day back in the gym in over a month. This tells me that I don't lift near often enough. Time to start getting back in shape. Some people refrain from beating a dead horse. ACMESkydiver 0 #3 January 18, 2008 That's part of what I liked about this 'baby beginner' Kung Fu...no strain on the joints and wearing the muscles to exhaustion. I can do a lifting routione on the same day if I want to. -Or I can just practice a whole bunch more and get myself sore from that. ~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action. skybytch 273 #5 January 18, 2008 Got in 26 miles last week, beat my goal by one. Slacking a bit this week, have only managed 17 miles out of a goal of 27 and it's already Friday. Some things I've noticed after almost two weeks of averaging 4+ miles/day, 6 out of 7 days a week: I can't skip breakfast anymore. I'm no longer ready to be back home after a mile of walking - that comes after about 3.5 miles now. I can walk five miles one day and not be sore the next. Looking forward to school starting next week - that's 2-4 miles a day, Monday-Friday, just getting there and back again. Plus I have a two day a week walking class that'll add another 5-6 miles a week.

tigra 0 #7 January 18, 2008 I've had a Ballys membership since 1990, and being young and dumb at the time, I let them sell me their most expensive premier membership that lets me go to any Ballys location, any time. I paid a small fortune for it then, went several years of barely using the gym at all and almost cancelled my membership more than once. But now my dues are relatively cheap and the location near my office is great- pretty much full service, including a pool and sauna, a decent class schedule and a ton of trainers available. Needless to say, with my newfound healthy and fit lifestyle , I'm glad I held on to the membership. Its great that you have the discipline to workout at home - I am very very bad about that! I've got the dvds, yoga mat, balance ball, dumbells, resistance bands, etc., but I almost never use them. I even bought those "push up pros" before Christmas, and I've used them all of 3 times! Anyway, my workout schedule is back on track but my diet- not so much- and the scale is not moving in the right direction. I don't LIKE dieting, counting calories, counting carbs, fat grams or anything else but if I want to lose that holiday weight plus get back on track for the rest of the weight I want to lose, I'm probably going to have to do something along those lines....... McBeth 0 #8 January 18, 2008 Well I've been working out 4-5 days a week and eating healthy for the last week and a half. Not seeing much movement in the scale yet, but I feel healthier. I think I need to throw some more cardio into my schedule.
ACMESkydiver 0 #9 January 18, 2008 I had Bally's memberships twice...once when I was 15 (the gym guy told me to lie about my birthdate on the app and it would be ok ). It was supposed to be 'month to month', but the guy signed me up on some kind of required membership for 2 years. When I sent in my letter and everything saying I was dropping my membership, they tried to send me to collections for over $500! My mom sent them in a letter with a copy of my birth cetificate and suggested that they remove the charge from my credit or she'd get an attorney. My parents were pretty mad at me. The second time was a few years ago. I was working, and like you, I took the 'use any club you want' membership because my job had me driving all over the freaking Puget Sound. That was ok too, once again, until I needed to cancel the membership. I brought in the paperwork like they requested and they continued auto-debiting my account for over a year (I didn't notice because that's Joe's account ). Apparenlty they 'lost' my request. When I went in to ask about it, I said, 'Fine, print out my membership card then.' -They wouldn't do it because they said I hadn't been a member for over a year! Of course I asked them what I was paying for then...f*ckers wouldn't give me any of the money they incorrectly debitted back. I had a copy of the letter but our computer crashed so there went the copy. Oh wells...my fault. I shouldn't have been a dumb teenager, and I should have gotten on top of that auto-debit sooner. ~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action. I think I need to throw some more cardio into my schedule. Good work! [mini rant] I think scales should only be used by people that are obese. % body fat and how you feel and how you look (if that's your goal, for many of us that's part of it!) are more important than numbers on a scale. A workout guru that I just love once said, "Do you carry a scale around with you and show it to everyone saying, "My arms and legs are giggly, but look! I only weigh 'X' pounds!" You're such an attractive lady Beth I'd just hate for you to rely upon a scale to tell you that. If you need to lose any true pounds, it's just going to be slower for you than if you were 75 pounds over weight because your body doesn't feel the need to let go of it so quickly. Just a reminder to not beat yourself up; looks like you have a great habit there! ~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action. McBeth 0 #11 January 18, 2008 I'm not beating myself up about it actually. I do need to lose some pounds, but I'm ok with them coming off slowly. Right now I can feel my body building up more muscle which is good. Actually you just reminded my I can use my scale to tell me body fat too.
tigra 0 #12 January 18, 2008 Yeah, I've also had some problems with Ballys over the years and because of them, I will never sign another long term contract or agree to auto debiting with them or pretty much anyone else. Of course, instead of actually reading the contract, I believed what I was told and signed on the bottom line. When I started having issues, I pulled out the original contract and sure enough, there it was and there was my signature...... They lied, but I'm the one who didn't read the contract I signed, and I wasn't 15 either! Anyway, I took my lumps early on in my membership and learned my lesson on how to deal with them. Now they bill me and I pay them once a year, no more monthly auto debits. My trainer tried to get me to sign a long term contract for personal training sessions but backed off and lets me pay for a few sessions at a time, in cash as I can afford them. Smart kid- he knows how to hang on to his clients! Also, I'm not sure how it is where you live, but in the Chicago area, there are tons of Ballys locations and they range from kind of small and dumpy (like the one closest to my house) to really nice like the one near my office. With so many locations, its incredibly convenient. Plus, I can't even join the YMCA for what I am paying at Ballys now, and that's for only the one YMCA near my house. I think most of the health clubs do the high pressure sales, long term contracts and auto debits. You've just got to read the contracts carefully and be really insistent about what you want. If they want your business, they'll work with you.

NWFlyer 2 #14 January 18, 2008 Down 12 lbs at the weigh-in at the doctors office yesterday (that's since my last appointment on December 17). Yesterday I wore a pair of pants I haven't worn in a while. Great workout this morning - I was really feeling the workout buzz, which was nice. Have a walk planned with a friend tomorrow, and a group of us might actually bundle up and do some popsicle-jumping on Sunday. newbloomer 0 #15 January 19, 2008 After my last post about running 6 miles I decided that would be my new set distance for when I went out running. Mind you I went from 3 to 6 miles in less than a week. Well now my shin splints are giving me hell. I tried to go out and run with a few people on my H2C team last weekend. We did about 4 miles and that hurt pretty bad so I decided to take this week off. I am going to try to get in a little 2 mile tomorrow to test things out. If all is good I will pick it up to 4 on Monday and increase a little slower this time. I was told that if I increase my miles too quickly I could end up with injuries. I think when this race is over I will take a rock climbing class. I have never done that before and it looks like fun to me. Any body here climb?"not all grief is bad grief, just ask Charlie Brown"
DSE 5 #16 January 19, 2008 Congrats! One of our T/I's told me I was feeling slow because I'm a toad in the cold months and he designed a fitness program for me that I'm somewhat sticking with, 7lbs in 15 days. He tells me I could do better if I'd give up fries n' shakes. If you want to meet a monster skydiver who also has serious chops in the weight loss/fitness world, check out Mike Semanoff. mnealtx 0 #19 January 19, 2008 Ok...back off night shift, so I'm getting back into this. Found what looks to be an interesting set of self-resistance and bodyweight exercises called the "Miracle 7". It's based off of the "Tiger Move" exercises advocated by John McSweeney. I'm going to give it a try and see where it takes me. It's something that I can do at the conex and isn't reliant on finding enough time to wait for umpteen dozen other people to get done with the machine I want to use, at the gym. So : Current weight: 215 Goal: 185 Plan: Healthier diet (I have to find a way to get 5-6 smaller meals rather than 3) Do the exercises mentioned above every day, gradually increasing intensity and eventually adding some bodyweight exercises. Better a 20 minute workout that I *can* make time for, than a 1 hour workout that I *hope* to make time for depending on how crowded the gym is. Walk at least 30 minutes every day - back and forth to work and to chow comes close to covering this, but I will probably add to it once I see how well the exercises are going. My nutrtitionist says you have a plan, then you have a backup plan, then you have a backup backup plan. So you never have an excuse for doing nothing. You may go from a planned full hour and a half at the gym in the morning to squeezing in a 20 minute walk after dinner, but you still did something. Same goes for food. You have what you plan to eat, then if something goes wrong and you can't eat/prepare what you planned originally because you get stuck in traffic ... you've got something healthy stashed in your glove compartment so you don't have to stop at McDonald's ... or [insert whatever backup plan is appropriate for your situation here]."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. Jumpervint 0 #21 January 19, 2008 Still thinking about exercise. I know I need to do it, but damn, I'm lazy and I can find lots of excuses. One plus side it it's the end of the semester and the p.e. teacher was doing the body-fat measurement on the students as part of the end of semester check. I had him calculate mine and it's 17.9%. I feel pretty good about that, considering what a slug I am. Vint. . . . . "Make it hard again."
