Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh.
Lindsey 0 #27 January 11, 2008 I think it's pretty clear that drinking in moderation is healthy. Decreases your risk of coronary artery disease, raises your HDL. BUT heavy drinking has some nasty effects--raises your blood pressure....and leads folks to do stupid stuff that sometimes leads to their demise. A little bit is good. A little bit more is not. linz-- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail

Can you point me to any (good) studies that show this? I tend to think it's probably true that having say one glass of wine every day could be good for you, but I haven't seen any studies yet that seemed conclusive to me. I've heard it repeated many times in the news, but that doesn't mean much. And as for the effects of heavy drinking, I have no doubts about that. I've seen enough proof - liver failure, pancreatitis, seizures, brain damage, heart problems, stomach problems... Fun stuff.
Shotgun 1 #29 January 25, 2008 Not sure if anyone else is interested, but I did manage to find a study (well, an analysis of a bunch of different studies), that actually addresses many of the questions I've had about these reports on the health benefits of alcohol. And therefore, it's a little more convincing to me than anything else I've read on the subject: http://pubs.niaaa.nih.gov/publications/arh25-4/255-261.pdf (Yeah, it's really long, and probably uninteresting to most people.)
