Trash Rant

Recommended Posts

We live in a nice area of an upscale Houston suburb.

All the houses here are on about 5 wooded acres and are kept up beautifully.

The problem is all the yard waste, I counted approx. 300 trash bags lining the road this morning..30-40 per house on my street alone! :S

Where is all this stuff going and when is that place gonna be FULL?! :o

We have a compost pile at the far end of the property that a neighbor regally raids for his garden...which is fine, we don't use it.

But it just blows my mind when I see all this waste going to someplace for underground storage.

Rant over...

That volume is a seasonal thing, as the leaves have just finished falling from the trees. Normal volume I'm sure is much less.

All those leaves probably help kick-start the decomposition of everything else in the landfill.

Yeah it's 'seasonal' but that's 3 months now that leave bags have been being put out for pick up...this 30 bags per house is a weekly thing! :S

I don't know how well the decomposing thing works inside of a plastic bag. ;)

I just bought a home in a nice burb, SE of Houston.

wtf is up with "not" having trash bins to stow your trash in between pickups!! :o

There are no 'bins' in any of the residential areas up here, just bag it and put it on the driveway for pick-up...people put the yard waste along the street so they can USE their driveways.

We're in an older section of town that as a grandfather clause in the trash up up...2 times a week and no limit on the number of bags...the newer areas have a limit and only one day a week pickup...of course they don't have as big of yards.

Other morning I watched this HUGE ass raccoon going house to house pilfering everyones trash. :D

I just moved from Austin, everyone had trash bins assigned to their homes... cut down on animals digging through it.

Much better to just feed the fuckers. At least they'll leave the trash alone.

Does the local PD get a lot of missing-person reports in your neighborhood?:S

Was it all dead leaves? Sounds like a good time to start a composting program.

People waste and throw out too much anyway. With a family of 5-6, we barely fill one garbage can a week. Most families in our 'hood put out at least 2 cans a week for fewer people.:S

I'm about like you. But my wife, myself and our little kid barely fills up the container after TWO weeks, and I have a self-built recycling center right there in my garage with separate bins for newspaper, paperboard, cardboard, plastics, aluminum, and steel. Food scraps and used coffee beans go in the compost. :)

I'm happy with my citys efforts there getting better. All yard waste only gan be in larger paper bags of for brush and tree limbs bundled and put at the curb for Composting pick up. In the fall the leaves can be left curb side for Vacum truck pickup.

WE have a green bin for food waste that is Picked up every week , Rycling and garbage alternate every week and now they have a fixed size garbage bin if you exceed it you pay extra we have 3 adults and two kinds in the house and with teh composting and recycling we have yet to exceed the garbage limit

And any thing that not garbage we call good will for pickup of items that can be reused.
SO this one time at band camp.....

Bulldozers drive over everything to flatten it and compact it. Those bags bust open.

Some garbage companies even have special trucks just to pick up yard waste. They pile that stuff up off to the side of the landfill, turn it over now and then, and let it become compost, then sell it for extra profit.
