Lastchance 0 #1 January 29, 2008 Last summer my wife and I found two of these spiders in her roses and her lilies. This was on two seperate occasions but only about a week apart. There were no webs and these little guys would lie in wait just as you see and wait for a honey bee to land in the flower and would then attack the bee and sink their fangs into the bees head. We killed both of them which we probably shouldn't have done. We should've kept one. Anyway we never seen another. Maybe this summer. We have looked in several insect and spider books but have not been able to find it. We are in Montana and so far nobody that we have shown thes pics to can identify it. Thry were very small. Only about half the size of my thumbnail, if that. Can anybody out there identify it? Thanks I may be getting old but I got to see all the cool bands. Broke 0 #8 January 29, 2008 I don't know. I remember finding one at work, and decided since no one was getting injured it would be a good think to kill a couple of hours researchingDivot your source for all things Hillbilly. livendive 8 #9 January 29, 2008 Quote They are also commonly called "flower spiders" because they are most often found on flowers, lying in ambush for prey. Crab spiders do not build webs to trap prey, but are active hunters much like the jumping spiders Like I said...they're the scary kind. Of course in my mind, so are the spiders that build webs, but "active hunters" give me the willies too. Blues, Dave"I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" Shotgun 1 #10 January 29, 2008 QuoteThry were very small. Only about half the size of my thumbnail, if that. The roses in those pictures must be tiny! At first I thought the spider was huge, but I guess I'm just used to seeing really big roses.
Lastchance 0 #11 January 29, 2008 Thanks for the link. It appears that my question has been aswered. I generally don't kill the spiders unless they are widows, recluse, boxers or hobos. But these guys were killing the honey bees. To bad they don't kill the killer bees. I may be getting old but I got to see all the cool bands.
Lastchance 0 #12 January 29, 2008 These roses were smaller than normal. My wife is a grower in a greenhouse so our property is bascally an extension of that. She grows more flowers and plants than you can shake a stick at. Her lilies last summer were taller than she is. 5'5". I skydive for stress relief and she grows things. She couldn't kill a plant if she tried. I may be getting old but I got to see all the cool bands.
