ltdiver 3 #1 January 19, 2008 For those Apple-nerds, you already know. For those who don't follow the latest breaking news at Apple, here's the scoop. Apple just announced this week the ability to RENT movies through their iTune's Store. Click, and it's "better than Netflix". Right there on your computer, with ability to switch to your iPod or iTV playback. Rental yours for 30 days. Sounds great, yes? I got an iTunes card for Christmas...I'm bored (had the week off, not of my own intentional choice...but that's another subject all together). So, decided to have a look-see tonight. Perhaps watch a movie that I hadn't seen before. Right! Go through the clicks to register my gift card. Select my movie. And walla! Download starts! I go get a snack. I come back. Download's still happening. Okay, so I have a DSL and not a cable or some other broadband thingamajigger... I check how long the download's going to be (for a 2 hour regular movie). Download time remaining: 4 HOURS! WTF!! Just to warn you guys what it's all about. Guess I'll watch the movie tomorrow.... ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
Gawain 0 #2 January 19, 2008 iTunes has been burdened lately. Usually, it takes me about 45 minutes to download a 1.5GB+/- movie. Apple has been selling iPods as fast as they can make them. Certain times of day their servers are just not up to the task.So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! ltdiver 3 #3 January 19, 2008 This is a 1.04GB movie I'm trying to download. And it's taking 4 hours. Took a look at my DSL's speed right now (with the download happening at the same time). (see attachment) Sigh ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
Gawain 0 #4 January 19, 2008 Looks like PacBell is screwing you...that and it's early evening on a Friday night in SoCal... You can pause it, and try in an hour....that might clear things up a bit.So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! AggieDave 6 #5 January 19, 2008 So what you're saying is that it takes about as long for you to download the movie as it takes for me to get one in the mail from Netflix? HA! I for one HATE iTunes. For a company that prides its self on clean and efficient electronics, computers and software, its the largest memory hog on my PC. Its worst then Microsoft Office. I still use it and purchase music that way, but it annoys me still.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." You can pause it, and try in an hour....that might clear things up a bit. Well, I checked the speed this morning and it was better (see attachment). Not blazing fast by any means. More like the turtle had all 4 legs back instead of hopping around on one. So, since I'm sitting at home again today, I contacted my ISP provider to see what could be done. Troubleshooting did nothing to help (I think they were reading from a book. ). So I asked to speak with Customer Service about different upgrade plans. Looks like I'm upgraded to a 3.0 Mbps with the same price for my effort! (or I could have paid $10 less to keep the same stinking speed). I opted to go faster! So in 5-7 days (the rep said) I should be blazing around the internet like a rabbit instead of the turtle. Pays to complain! ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon

Once you start playing a movie you have 24 hours to finish watching it....not 30 days. You can watch it as much as you want in those 24 hours but at the end of 24 hours This practice is, apparently, consistent with other download rental services according to stuff I have read elsewhere. Because I live in Canada this isn't available yet. I don't know if I'd use it or not. Lori...what is the quality like? Did you download one of the HD movies?-- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

I normally don't watch a movie more than once when I rent it anyway. But you have 30 days to begin that 24 hour window. Quality was great on the movie I rented. No gripes there at all. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
ltdiver 3 #9 January 30, 2008 Resurrecting an almost 2 week old thread for an update. My ISP -finally- got around to connecting my house to its 3.0 Mb/s service. (see attachment) 2.8, not too bad! And to top it off they dropped my rate per month too. Downloading another iTunes Movie Rental now (really just to see the difference in download time). A 1.48 GB movie now takes only 70 minutes to download! Compared to 4 hours, that's a HELL of alot better!! Now to see what else I can stir up while I'm stuck here at home....ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
