students:what to do with a bitch prof?(long)

Recommended Posts

Is it too late to switch sections (presuming someone else teaches it)? If not then switch. If it is something that only she teaches then drop, and take it next semester or the semester after when hopefully she wil have forgotten you.

It's not worth risking her GPA in a class where the grading is extremely subjective and the professor doesn't like her.

I too agree... I took a photography class in my last year in College...

I had very old equipment... as in it was manufactured in 1967... but it did require that I paid attention to what I was doing... to get results...

Good Luck.

I have received additional information that changes my position. If you don't need it to graduate and have time to drop; you should exercise that option. Having said that, (and this is my own personality flaw), I wouldn't just drop without discusing the whole situation with the Dean of the college. You see, for every person in a position of authority, there's always someone in authority over them. But again, that's just my way and it hasn't always served me well. >:( = B|

I gotta mostly agree with bigun. What you wrote about her doesn't suggest (to me) an insurmountable hurdle in the student/teacher relationship. Email is notoriously bad for communicating the body language and intonation clues in a message, so it wouldn't surprise me if her "get a note from your parents" was intended at least somewhat playfully. Also, for someone teaching any particular curriculum, the implication by an entry level student that they should be immediately employable in the industry could be taken as somewhat of an insult, as it discredits the middle, upper level, and ancilliary topics they teach as unnecessary or a waste. I'm not particularly amenable to letting my skydiving students skip parts of my instruction just because they think they're good enough to not need my help. Also, getting notes for a missed class from a fellow student is a perfectly reasonable expectation. To be honest, it wouldn't surprise me if your emotions are fueling the fire. I suggest you play nice with her for a week and see if things improve.

there's also a website where you can rate college professors.

http://ratemyprofessors.com/index.jsp

I'm of mixed opinion on these sites. Students are customers these days. OTOH, easiest and most effective way to get an excellent review there (& in the evaluations most universities do internally) is to give everyone "A"s, whether they deserve it or not. Pressure to grade inflate? Absoutely!

If one is an adjunct prof, renewal of one's contract may depend on "good" evaluations, If one is non-tenured prof, teaching evaluations are a small portion of consideration for promotion & pay raises. Rarely are there any tangible negative consequences if an instructor does grade inflate and few to no positive incentives for an instructor to not grade inflate. (Ethics is another thing.)

When I t.a.'d as a grad student, I remember one written comment from end of semester evalauation (actually still have it ... somewhere):

"She's the John Wayne of chemistry t.a.'s."

Wasn't quite sure whether that was supposed to be a good thing or not? :oB| The student did give me good numerical scores ...

Yeah - but you could just walk up and say - I WANT AN A!!! and she would be scared and give you one.

Have you neverheard the golden rule with activist professors? Every thing you write must confirm their beleifs. I had a communications prof who was a real bitch (hated men, capitalism, heterosexuality and the consumption of meat by anyone). I started off writing in accordance with my views and it did not pay off. When I had a "enlightenment" and suddenly wrote like a vegetarian, man-hating lesbian (tough role playing for a guy) and geared all my papers to what she wanted to hear my grades went up. At the end she commented on what a great guy I was even though she initialy despised me. People like that are petty. Avoid the battle and agree with them.
My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.

Write a letter to her superior describing your situation and the way you've been treated. Keep it professional and non-whiny - keep to the facts.

Hell, I'd take the letter all the way up the chain. :P

She wasnt joking. She said flat out that it was stated in her syllabus and was required. Also let me clarify that everything said with the exception of the note requirement was done in person. So I read her tone and voice inflection very clearly.

I tried to show her my work to get her professional opinion on taking the intern level position job (ie NOT professional or higher level) at the paper and she refused to look at it.So she didnt even give me a chance to show her what my skill level was.I told her I didnt need the credits and was just excited to be in a photo class b/c it was my hobby and she was still a bitch.

Getting notes from another student wasnt the problem.I got those. But even the other students are saying they dont understand the darkroom procedures b/c she rushed through them so fast.So the things I need to know for darkroom procedure needs to come from her so I get it right b/c the chemical mixing and such is very important.

I'll play nice for a week, but my time frame is limited b/c every day I spend in her class is that much less I'll receive as a tuition refund for dropping by a certain date in the semester. And as for the suggestion to change sections or profs:I cant.Shes the only photog. prof and theres only one section.

I do admit,my emotions play a part in this. But this is a hobby and something I'm passionate about so how can I not be emotional about it?If someone called you an unprofessional or bad skydiver w/o ever seeing you fly wouldnt you be a bit upset?Sorry, just my opinion.

With this prof I wouldnt know where to begin with writing a letter to her superiors.Everyone in the class is clueless on darkroom procedures b/c she flew through them so quickly and then left saying "ok now you do it." leaving no room for questions etc. and the Photography II students say shes never around for help.Lets not forget that her son is in our class and she is already making it clear who's getting an A there. But as for my own experience with her what would I say other than she was rude and uncooperative? How would I explain my situation stated in the OP without sounding "whiny"?

Well I just found out that one of my favorite teachers from high school (who was one of my ROTC instructors and loved me) is on the college's Board of Directors.:)

Set her up on a blind date with waltappel.

I must admit, that in the sickest, most twisted, darkest, most fucked up depths of my demented mind, I kind of like that idea.

But you're a sick fuck for thinking of it! :D:D:D:D

i took a photo class in highschool and the teacher was an asshole, at least to the guys. he was pretty friendly with the females though. come to think of it, he was down right creepy. anyway, if you don't need it, drop the class but definitely let the right people know why you've dropped it. there's also a website where you can rate college professors. i'll see if i can find it.

after a long and arduous search, i finally came across this thing called google, which led me to this:

http://ratemyprofessors.com/index.jsp

no matter what you decide, you can still write a review of her there.

Entertaining site.
