students:what to do with a bitch prof?(long)

Recommended Posts

So I'm taking a Photography 1 course at the college on top of my required classes just b/c I thought I'd enjoy it.But the prof has turned out to be a total BITCH!

I missed 1 class of hers b/c my sister had to go to the ER and so I had to watch her 5 kids for the day and couldnt very well take them with me.So I emailed her telling her the situation and she replied that I needed to bring her a note from my parents explaining why I missed her class...wtf? I'm 25yrs old!

After my next class with her I asked her to show me what/how to do the darmroom procedures that I missed and the assignment she gave out that day and she said she was too busy and to get another student to show me how/what I missed.

Also I asked her if she'd help me put together a portfolio for an intern photographer's job at the local newspaper and she said that if I was too busy to come to her class than she was too busy for me and that "theres no way possible a Photo 1 student could possibly have the talent for a job with the newspaper."She wouldnt even look at my work with the exception of 1 pic which she said was "unprofessional" and that since it was a nature pic the paper doesnt need nature photographers. I was in tears when I left her.:(:(

The last straw was that she said my equipment wasnt any good.News flash bitch: I worked for Norman Kent for a summer and I own his old equipment from "Willing to Fly".So its not crappy equipment!>:(

So I'm just at the point now where I want to drop the class since I dont need it to graduate.I know I'm going to hear "suck it up cupcake",but what should I do?[:/]

IMO, some of the most "I don't give a shit", non-customer-focused people in existence work in educational institutions. By no means are they all like that but there is no shortage.

The bad part is that there really isn't much you can do unless they cross a bigtime line.

If you are concerned about the effect on your GPA, ditch the class. If not, then learn what little you can.

I'd get a second opinion. In any situation, it is better to have as much information from different sources.
Try to pick reputable sources.

You'd be better off sending an email to NK.
He might know a news media photographer who could give you an experts opinion.

Learn to listen to valid criticism while discounting the opinions that may not have much value. (Has she worked in private industry?)

Nah - i wouldn't fuck her with Billy's dick and Walt pumping!

Drop the class, then write the dean a nice note telling him why.
Then do the same in a mass e-mail to the school.

Sounds good to me. Make sure everybody knows about the sister in the ER and having to watch the nieces and nephews. Fucking frigid bitch should get it up her ass. :| Edited to add: of course, you might want to wait til you get your degree first... How much longer til that happens?

i took a photo class in highschool and the teacher was an asshole, at least to the guys. he was pretty friendly with the females though. come to think of it, he was down right creepy. anyway, if you don't need it, drop the class but definitely let the right people know why you've dropped it. there's also a website where you can rate college professors. i'll see if i can find it.

after a long and arduous search, i finally came across this thing called google, which led me to this:

http://ratemyprofessors.com/index.jsp

no matter what you decide, you can still write a review of her there.

Sounds great! That website should also be in the email she mass-mails the entire school. >:(

Wow! As an educator, I really hate to read about things like this. It does happen sometimes, however. There may really be nothing you can do, but if you decide to stay in the course, make friends with a student who seems to be being successful. If you really don't need the course and it won't effect any financial aid you receive, dropping it may be a good thing. It's really a shame that this happened. Photography is such a fun thing to do, almost as good as skydiving, but not quite.
If you do stay in the class, be sure to fill out a class evaluation if you can, or as others have said, let the prof's dean or division chair know of the problems, especially if the person is an adjunct instructor.

Compared to some of the camera's released in the last 5-8 years the older gear does have a lot of items missing that newer/better gear has. The newer gear tends to have better metering, better Autofocus, faster frame rates, wider ranges for shutter speeds, etc. Anyone that needs that is a gear snob but I'll admit I could never give up the convience of digital and the new features it provides.

Drop the class, its not worth it for you to spend the energy on it if you are not getting something out of every class.

I'm 6 classes from having my degree after this semester. So if I do classes over Summer I and II semester(s) then I could easily graduate in December.Otherwise I'll be graduating Spring of next year.:)
I am worried about my GPA b/c as it stands right now I have a 3.298 GPA and dont want it to go down any further b/c I'm trying to get into the general college Honor Society (Phi Theta Kappa) and I think you have to have either a 3.3 or a 3.5 GPA to be invited to join.I'm already a member of the National Criminal Justice Honor Society (Alpha Phi Sigma)....it looks good on the transcript.:)B|

I see your point Phree, but I have by far the best equipment in the class (since it is an Intro to Photography B&W film class) so she shouldnt be bitching. Not only do I have NK's Minolta Maxxum 7xi and 8000i, but I also have a Canon Rebel Ti and a Rebel GII.

Hell, she told people to go to pawn shops and eBay to get an SLR camera for the class (and some still dont have their cameras yet),so why is my equipment not good enough?:S[:/]

Dropping the class is looking better and better all the time even though I hate giving up on stuff.[:/]

Well, I'm not going to pat you on the butt and say, "You poor thing." There are always going to be those in positions of authority that aren't going to be to your liking. You gonna cut bait and run every time? Now, is the time to learn to deal with it and see if you can win her over. Show her what you can do; not what you can ask. You up for the challenge?
Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.

It's not worth risking her GPA in a class where the grading is extremely subjective and the professor doesn't like her.

I agree -

Drop it and deal with her another way.

The teacher sounds kinda moody.:D
