Rapid Heart Beat

Recommended Posts

Quote

My host-dad is just having a problem with his heart beat. It has been very high for the whole day according to him. In the last half hour it was constantly over 160 and he was sitting still.

I know the smartest thing would probably be to go to the hospital, but he does not want to so I thought I might as well ask if anybody ever experienced something like that.

he needs to go to the er asap

I am completely aware of the fact that not much reliable information is going to come, but it would still be nice to hear from some people who know what they are talking about.

but he needs to be looked at for the underlying cause of the irregular rhythm.......

this is a way that his heart is saying....pay attention to me there is something wrong here. Some problems aren't serious (caffeine induced) - some are very serious....so he should be looked at. Just because he feels good now doesn't meant that there isn't a problem that needs to be looked at. How serious it is - who knows, it will be up to whoever see's him to figure that out.

The rhythm didn't seem to be irregular just very fast.

Caffeine rules out as an option since he didn't drink or eat any today.

Thanks for all the tips. I already told him he should go to the hospital tomorrow.

nice poker game tonight....will we see you next week?

When your heart rate is 160/minute, it's really difficult to tell whether it's regular or irregular. Afib's a very likely culprit. Either way, ya' REALLY shouldn't try to diagnose it over the skydiving forums, imho....just a hunch.... A visit to the good doctor is warranted here.

The thing is I'm not his mum and if he thinks he doesn't need to go to the hospital he won't.

Exactly. People can make that decision. (it might be unwise, but it can still be made)

But. Just for your info. If he starts acting weird (especially in light on this history), do not hesitate to call 911. They show up, get him hooked up to the monitor and if necessary can do what needs to be done.
