Twoply 0 #1 February 2, 2008 I've read that many artists will, upon completion of a painting, almost dispose of it because it's energy has been spent during it's creation and now it's just a canvas with paint on it. Is this common or no?
aprilcat 0 #2 February 2, 2008 Okay..before I answer, did you paint that face on that butt? Did you wipe the paint off that canvas?? Most artists have a 'stash' of things that took their energy and they just 'put it away' or destroyed what they do not feel is complete. My son paints and I have a LOT of stuff that he thinks wasn't what he wanted it to be and I see the effort in it and stop him from totally trashing it. I have his first published card framed and he doesn't know 'why' I have that. I give away more photos than the IRS wants me to and it feels right to me. I photographed an entire wedding from beginning to end (even pre-rehearsal shots) for exchange of an original painting of the Monterey Jazz Fest. I should have taken the cash, but the joy of having this painting done for 'me' was satisfying to the painter (and he's done better, but I'm happy with it) and the exchange of our 'gifts' made me feel great too. There are always 'things' to be 'found' on the sidewalks of NYC...flea markets..yard sales...I think what you asked about 'spent energy' is true..its not exactly what the artist had in mind but either you destroy it, toss it in the trash or give it away JUST because its been worked over for 6 months, 6 years..or 6 decades... A little side note (if you didn't know how insane Van Gough was)...he used to EAT his paint to really 'digest' his artwork and make it a true part of himself. Um...I think THAT is as hardcore as you can get...what are those textured stokes REALLY about? Hmmmmmm??? If you're looking for 'art just laying around' you'll get plenty from painters..really beautiful stuff, but ask to look under their beds and in the closet an garage..thats where the best stuff is.If you are attracted to the piece..you can get it for nothing but the promise of a good home~~April Camelot II, the Electric Boogaloo! Is this common or no? common? i could not say... i can say that painting was often a cathartic act and that once complete there was no good reason (apart from ego or the need for recognition, neither of which i am a fan of) for it to exist anymore... perhaps it may have been the next great thing and made me an instant millionaire, perhaps it was complete shit... but either way it mattered not, the reason it was painted was over and done and if it still existed at all (many were destroyed in continuation of the 'cathartic act') it was under the paint of the next thing I NEEDED to paint...____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
