floridadiver81 0 #1 February 1, 2008 Ok..brief background on this motor and tranny. The motor took on about half a gallon of water due to the driver at the time being a completely stupid blond. Total damage is 1 broke rod, bearings shattered, 1 inch hole in the front of the block and a spiderweb crack on the backside of the block, 8 bent valves in the head. Im thinking there is tranny damage also. So i started the engine removal process. Got everything out. I took the starter gear and flywheel off and put them back in the bell housing until i get a replacement motor. I manually turned it and its not spinning perfectly round. I took a video of it and put it online to help with the diagnosis. dunesurfer 0 #5 February 1, 2008 I can't pull up your video. Is this an auto or manual trans? On a manual trans the input shaft is partially supported by a bushing or bearing in the end of the crankshaft, so it may seem to wobble under the conditions described. For an auto, the "snout" of the torque convertor is mainly supported by the crankshaft, not the bushing and oil pump drive in the trans. Edit to add: what you see may be normal when the engine is disconnected from the tranny

JackC 0 #7 February 1, 2008 Is is a manual or an automatic tranny? If it's manual, it could just be that the clutch isn't alighned or if it's auto then it could be the torque converter, the flywheel or possibly the 1st motion (input) shaft that is bent. Normally, an engine sucking up water wont affect the tranny. Try taking off the flywheel and secure a sick on the bell housing so the end is against the input shaft so you can use it as a reference point, then see if the shaft spins true. floridadiver81 0 #8 February 1, 2008 It is a manual. When i turned the crank when the tranny was still attached it turned fine. I just want to make sure everything is normal with the tranny before i put a new motor on in and install it. It took me being a novice about 9 hours in time to remove everything."Age has absolutely nothing to do with knowledge, learning, respect, attitude, or personality." -yardhippie "Fight the air, and the air will kick your ass!!! JackC 0 #9 February 1, 2008 Did you align the clutch when you fitted the flywheel onto the tranny? If not, that's probably all it is.
dunesurfer 0 #10 February 1, 2008 It should be good to go then. The only real threat to the trans when submerged is rust. If you haven't done so already, check/change the gear oil in the trans, ditto for a differential if it is a rear wheel drive.

I think you are looking to far into things.. did it start fine when you turned over the starter? I only put it back on there to get it out of the way and not take up any more room in the shed other than the room i have already taken up....which right now is about half of it with car parts. The reason why im concerned that i messed something up in the transmission is when the rod snapped i was doing about 20 mph and i was shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. The clutch was still in when it popped and the motor completely seized because the bottom end of the rod wedged itself against the cylinder wall. Im thinking the sudden stop of the crank might have bent something on the transmission considering it went from roughly 25 mph to complete crank stop in less than a second."Age has absolutely nothing to do with knowledge, learning, respect, attitude, or personality." -yardhippie "Fight the air, and the air will kick your ass!!!
