MikeForsythe 0 #1 February 5, 2008 We all jump, party and work hard but what do you do to help the world be a better place? Me, I take my SAR/Therapy dog Cara to the local nursing home and children’s hospital to make their day a little better. When I sheer the sheep on my ranch I bring the wool to the local elementary school for the kids to do crafts with. I also still volunteer with a local SAR team. So, what do you do?Time and pressure will always show you who a person really is!
PLFXpert 0 #2 February 5, 2008 Quote I take my SAR/Therapy dog Cara to the local nursing home and children’s hospital to make their day a little better. Yea! I truly believe in animal therapy. I do various things for various reasons. I donate. I write. I petition. I boycott. And sometimes I attend functions because it makes for good networking & I don't mind--even sort of like--the cause (even if it's not my personal main cause). Regarding the latter I've actually come to really enjoy these events because we're all getting together doing what we would have done anyways (eat, drink, talk, try new things, sometimes shop) except our money actually goes toward something "for the children" or whatever. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
Brains 2 #3 February 5, 2008 Good post Mike, it made me think that i need to do more for the community.Right now i use my business to sponsor charity events (locally only) that we feel are worthy causes. It gives us great press and we can help out some very worthy local causes in the process and get others to come out and help/donate as well. I still think we could do more and we are working on doing some habitat for humanity projects as well. kbordson 8 #4 February 5, 2008 I give of my time, effort and heart. I have donated over 9 gallons of blood. I have cut my hair 3 (or is it 4) times and donated it to locks for love. I have gone on two medical missions (Guatamala and Peru). I have taught, tutored and mentored. I have been a Big Sister to a troubled teen in South Dakota. I have given money to help others achieve goals that they can't manage on their own. i have had my heart broken by a son that isn't mine, but I still give him the future. And it's still not enough. sharimcm 0 #5 February 5, 2008 I don't do enough, but I have donated my hair twice to Locks of Love (over 10 years of growing it out). On the lighter side, I support my local police. JustChuteMeNow 0 #7 February 5, 2008 Like most people I can say I could probably do more but I always try and help people that need it. That might be helping to change a tire or carrying groceries for the elderly. I am involved with an at-risk child through a school program called GRIP (Great Relationship In Pairs) where we met once a week for lunch and fellowship. I support our church and I think they do good things in our community and abroad. I also try to say Please and Thank You.Think of how stupid the average person is and realize that statistically half of them are stupider than that. NtheSeaOrSky 0 #8 February 5, 2008 For now, I donate blood and bone marrow. I turned my farm into an animal shelter, raise organic food for local homeless/battered shelters and those in need of food, bringing back destroyed habitat for an endangered species, volunteer as a wildlife rehabber, use my photographs to bring smiles and encouragement to people in local shelters, hospitals, or shut in at home, and apparently provide a group of soldiers overseas with entertainment through my writings. I do most of it anonymously and all of it without soliciting from others. Trying my best to leave it better than I found it.Life is not fair and there are no guarantees... selbbub78 0 #9 February 5, 2008 why aren't you sailing>???? Good post... I used to volunteer as an EMT on one of the first aid squads. But since i've moved to alaska, i've decided that I want to do search and rescue. I feel that it's a lot of hard work but the reward would be never-ending!!! :-) I'm also looking at starting to volunteer in a soup kitchen. It's been something that i used to do, and am trying to get back into the habit of doing again. livendive 8 #10 February 5, 2008 Not enough. I used to organize volunteer crews and staff semi-annual household hazardous waste collection events. Most of the stuff that came in was pretty routine that most people could find an easy, safe disposal route for with a little effort (e.g. used oil, car batteries, anti-freeze, etc), but some of the stuff was truly bad. Those made me feel good, but the city cut the funding, so I imagine a lot ends up improperly disposed of now. Whenever local search teams are needed, I volunteer as much free time as I can, but that's uncommon. I donate to several charities and would like to volunteer more, but I'm rather particular on who I'll give my time to (look at me dodging speaker's corner ). The last couple of years I haven't had a ton of free time, but your post is a nice reminder that I could make better use of some of it. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" kbordson 8 #11 February 5, 2008 Also my practice is predominately Medicaid, which means less financial return for my efforts - but more rewarding. (I figure someone took care of my sister when she was pregnant and on Medicaid... someone should take care of these others) But because of that, I have had insurance patients question "why are you taking so many Medicaid, is there a reason you can't get 'paying' customers?" skymama 37 #13 February 5, 2008 The activities I participate in for charities and donations I make always have to do with helping children. It's the Mom in me, I guess. I was brought up to just "do" and not brag about it, so it makes me little uncomfortable to talk about it. But, last year I implimented an idea to donate old uniforms, warm-ups and soccer balls from our High School team to some kids in Haiti. I would have loved to have seen the looks on the kids faces when the boxes were opened. I heard they had been playing soccer with mangos before that! She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon

moodyskydiver 0 #16 February 6, 2008 Cool thread Mike! Personally, I donate blood as often as I can and am currently growing my hair out longer to donate it to Locks of Love for the 2nd time.I do community service work with my Honor Society and I'm also a tutor at the college.I'm a member of the local Bipolar Alliance, that meets and teaches about this specific mental disorder.I'm currently trying to get more involved by joining more activities and organizations at school and the general public that help the community. Also, my family and I take in abused horses and do horse rescues (see the premarin thread in the womens forum) and give them lots of love and good treatment. We have a total of 24 horses at present. One day, we're hoping to everntually open an equine therapy operation for the disabled here at our home. But we can always do more. "...just an earthbound misfit, I."

Programmer 0 #18 February 6, 2008 The kids who play next door were riding their bikes into the street from behind a bush. I reminded one of the parents that cars coming around the curve won't see these kids until it's too late. She put a stop to that and got them to ride on the dead end street next to her house. It's a small thing, but I feel better knowing I'm less likely to hear screeching tires and sirens in my neighborhood.
Lindsey 0 #19 February 6, 2008 I think I do lots of things that help make the world a little better every day. Not one specific thing over and over, but little things along the way when I see a need and when I'm able. It's all just pay-back though, for what other folks have done for me. :) linz-- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged.
