So what do you do to help.......

Recommended Posts

I think it is great to be able to give a little back and go out of your way to do something special for others. It takes a very special person who is able to make the time and the difference for others.

Then there are those who do it on a daily basis by the line of work they do. Or the ones who just take the time to listen to someone regardless if it is their families, friends, or just some random person in that long line at the bank. So to those who dont realize you have made a difference you have to someone at some point in time without even knowing it by either something as simple as a smile in passing or a hello. It is about making difference to a person no matter how it is done.

I donate blood regularly (which reminds me, I'm eligible to donate again ... time to schedule an appointment).

I have a group of friends I've been volunteering with for about 8 years now. We've slowed down in recent years, but every 3 months or so we do a morning at the local food bank's distribution warehouse sorting donated food.

Most of my other participation is much more ad hoc. Most of my donations come in the form of supporting friends who are participating in fund raising efforts - if its a worthy cause to them I'll support the work they're putting into it.

I also volunteer from time to time at special events and would like to do more of that because it fits in well with my lifestyle. Last year I volunteered for the Komen Breast Cancer 3-Day walk and will probably do that again this year.

After school I coach the American Heart Associations Jump Rope team for my school. We meet twice a week for an hour (which always turns into 1.5 hours) then we trave around to schools in GA and perform our routine for the entire school or during the intermission of high school and college ball games.

The kids are all inner city kids with much bigger hearts and a willingness to help others than most people. They have to pay for their uniforms (raise money), do jumps through miles of parades, and most can out jump the acrobats in the Ringling Brothers Circus. You try to double dutch while doing a back flip.

My kids rock. Oh, and they have to keep a B average and stay out of trouble, too.

OK, so honestly I just guide them...they are the real talent.

I wish I was able to do more to help. Unfortunately I'm not in a place where I can help anyone financially and I have very little free time to do any sort of volunteer work. But I would like to think my work in EMS helps people in one way or another.

It does. Even if its not often recognized or appreciated, but really thats not necessary, it does.

design facilities for a Boy Scout camp, recruit and manage volunteers to build the stuff, spent $435K to build $950K in facilities, starting on a COPE course and 5-stand skeet range this month - any volunteers?:)

Give one city to the thugs so they can all live together. I vote for Chicago where they have strict gun laws.
