When it's time to quit...

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I know a load of ex-skydivers hang out here, but I guess this could be addressed to any addiction group really :)

I've hit a point where I have to pack up skydiving but it's more a case of circumstances dictating than a preferred choice, and as with all things we love doing, it stings a little.

I'm looking for advice on how you managed your exit. I guess for some people, it's a case of fear or injury, which I would think (hope?) makes it easier. But I'm really interested in hearing from those who had to quit when they didn't want to, and what they used to divert themselves or get past the longing :)

And yes, I'm aware that 'Staying off of DZ.com' would be a good start, and I do plan to... I just need to flog my gear and get some advice on the way out :)

My last jump was a special send off for someone that passed away. I got to jump with friends, and more friends to be with on the ground.

I don't know if I told anyone that day....but I knew it would be my last.

I didn't want to quit, I had to.

Wish I could get into more details but I have to run! I shouldn't be on the internet in the morning I have too much to do, I just wanted to see if Shell had seen the pic I grabbed for her.

I'll try to send you a PM and go into a little more detail later.

Good luck to you.

Safety reasons mainly... I'm just not progressing or getting better at certain key skills, and because of these, I'm limited in what I can do.

That coupled with the fact that I only get time to skydive about 20 days of the year, and I'm just not able to do enough to stay properly current and safe.

The fact that I only get to go out about 20 days a year means I'm picky about when I go, and I try to only go on days when there is a good forecast. Unfortunately, this means that the instructors / TIs / Manifest organisers are really busy, so I've not been able to get the training I need to sort my issues out.

I quit for 13 years. I tried to keep jumping, but there were more important things to do.

You have an excellent reason for quitting for now. But think of it as waiting until the time is right again, rather than quitting. You have 85 jumps, so if the time ever gets to be right, you'll have a HUGE step up.

Then go find something else time-consuming to do for awhile. It could be volunteering for some good cause, finding a new hobby, reading a bunch, or postwhoring on some other online forum .

Not everyone has a skydiving-sized and shaped hole in their life.

I'm actually on 101 jumps now, which makes things even worse...

Nope. Better. Because, well, if you ever mention it to folks who don't jump, they'll be more impressed with over a hundred than with 85. And you have accomplished that -- no one can ever take that away from you. You earned each and every one of those jumps. You don't have to mention it, but you'll always own them.

BTW -- the sky didn't go away while I was not-jumping...

Urk... I've just seen the poll relating to non / ex jumpers posting here. Is there any way to close this thread down ? I'll stop posting in it, and leave quietly, but I still reserve the right to post a classified.

I might not be good enough to socialise and share advice with, but my gear's pretty new, in excellent condition and going cheap, so I'm sure an exception will be made ;)

I think there is room for part time jumpers in our sport. Our DZ rents very nice new gear for $10 a jump for the occasional jumper. If you only make a dozen jumps a year, that's a great deal. Your talk of "sorting out probems" gives me pause as to whether or not the part time path would be okay for you, though. What kind of issues are you having?
