Should people that no longer Jump still post here?

Recommended Posts

The subject of people that rarely jump or no longer jump at all still posting came up in the open forum thread. In order to keep that thread on topic, I thought I would start a separate poll/thread to see what others thought.

Kitty brought up a good question in that thread about "why would someone that no longer Jumps post to a Skydiving forum?"

What are your thoughts?

There are various reasons some of us step out of the sport. Sometimes it is out of our control, others is is a decision we made for various reasons. I am one of those people who had to step out of the sport. I am still hoping it is a temporary thing and will be jumping again in the future. However, right now finances will not allow it. It started as an injury then turned into something else. I miss the sky and hope to be back in the sky soon. For now I am on the ground.

If it makes me less of a person because I had to choose to stay on the ground for the time being then so be it. I frankly do not care for the greater then thou attitude that some skydivers have developed. I am still a jumper, just not currently active and I have friends on the forums that I still communicate with.

If you do not want me around cause I am not current, my response...KISS MY WHITE ASS :P Get over yourself.

I have four jumps and a gazillion hours (more or less :)) of tunnel time. I don't know how many jumps I will *ever* have. However, I've learned a lot more than I ever thought I would about skydiving. My friends are skydivers. I focus regularly on bodyflight and it's what I love to do, but even though there are some "independent" tunnel resources out here, this is where I've found people with whom I have the most in common.

I'm not a "former" skydiver, but saying that they are not welcome would pretty well suggest to me that I'm not welcome, either, unless I start racking up some jump numbers pretty soon. I don't see any reason why there can't be room for everyone. There may be a lot of reasons why people aren't jumping and I don't see the benefit to excluding someone just because they're not current.

Edited to add: I read the other skydiving-specific forums but rarely post anything there unless it's a question. I DO think it's appropriate to self-monitor the input you give in some of the discussions, depending upon your current jumping status and experience.

why would someone that no longer Jumps post to a Skydiving forum

Well theres many reasons...if its in the community they post its because friends. I like to decorate cakes for a hobby and work with a friend, if I burned my hands and couldnt bake anymore I wouldnt expect her to stop being my friend. Skydiving isnt the end all be all to life, and if it is then those people werent your friends. What is it called "fair weathered friends" ?

If its in the topics part, well just cause someone quit doesnt mean they dont have the ability to post advice to others. If someone had 9000 jumps but quit a year ago because of whatever reason does not make his time in the sport less valuable.

I dont post as often because 1. I dont work online anymore and 2. Its the same day after day, and so I can check it less, check and send my pms and then move on to life. It has nothing to do with taking a break from the sky.
Sudsy Fist: i don't think i'd ever say this

Once a jumper always a jumper and their input even from a 'no longer skydiving' perspective is important and welcome.

Would that also be true for someone that just made a tandem Jump or two and/or maybe just did a few student Jumps?

Yup...they jumped! B|

I mean...how elitist do you wanna make it?

I like people that are honest about their jump #'s / time in sport in the profile section...it gives people an idea of their background and how much weight to give their opinions...

That being said, as a long time skydiver that has no clue as to what a student thinks...it's also nice / interesting to hear from someone with a VERY different perception than mine.

Because I have met some of the greatest people in the world.

So, where would you draw the line? How current do you think someone should be to be able to post?

That is an excellent question. I would love to hear from those that voted NO and what their reasoning for that was. Also like to know how many Jumps per Week/Month/Year they feel would be enough to be part of this community?

That and wanting to keep up with old friends. I voted yes. Though I still skydive.

I like this answer. And in the technical forums, sure they still have a place. Take Billvon or Quade for example, if they stopped jumping it doesn't mean the knowledge they have gained stops too.

I wonder if those that voted 'no' realize that they are but one car accident, injury, or medical condition away from losing their friends.

Would you really Loose friends if you didn’t post here?

Dude, I've jumped with you-do you really call that skydiving:P;):)Like I've already said, I jump about as little as anyone can:( But I keep up with friends here, make new ones, and try to keep myself on the "worthy to be invited to dinner at Kitty's" list:)

I agree...

I am not jumping right now, not because of choice but simply because my life will not allow me to jump right now. The last time I was at a DZ, I sat in my boyfriends trailer and cried becuase I want so badly to be back in the air. I don't I have ever missed anything this much. I am couting down the days until I can jump again. Sure I could afford to jump here and there, but with my low jump numbers it would be way to little to stay current and that I dont think is safe. So when I can start jumping again and stay current, I will be back in the air with a vengence!;)

Once a jumper, always a jumper!

I have not done a skydive in a year. Looks like i will not be jumping for about another year either with my vet bills coming in.

However, my business is Gear sales and skydiving is my life and it is killing me not being able to get to a dropzone.

Does that mean i should not be able to post in these forums?

Since you're talking about me, J, I will be happy to answer your question. I think this is the third time I've said it.

It has nothing to do with being "elitist". It has to do with the noise level here, and how its become increasingly difficult to use this site to make friends with people you might actually meet at a drop zone and skydive with.
The question used to be when you talked to someone new, "where do you jump?. Now its just "DO you jump?". And thats fine. I never said this site should only be current jumpers. But lately theres been a lot more noise from the whuffo crowd. I've noticed a lot of old school people quit posting because of it.

If I quit drinking wine, I would certainly stop posting on the wine enthusiasts forums and stop trying to be a part of that community. The friends I'd already made, I'd keep in touch with by phone, email, myspace, facebook, etc.

Thats my opinion, plain and simple. If you need a whole line of people to disagree with me to make yourself feel better... then have a good time with that.

Sure, I understand where you're coming from...:)
Well put it this way...how many times a day do you/I/we/any of us call up our friends and tell them about the new boss....something funny that came up at work...something that you couldn't believe happened...a triumph, a tragedy. typically, we don't, or we'd be on the phone all day. We do that all the time here. I've only talked to you on the phone once Jay, and hung out with you for a few days...but I think you and I know each other a little better than those limited interactions would have afforded based on what we talk about in the bonfire.

I didn't mention my kids once in those few days or on the phone, and you never spoke of your daughter during those brief times. But I know a BUNCH about your daughter from what you post here, and you know you have a friend that has kids with Autism. If you ever had a question about special ed advocacy for a friend or co-worker, I'm betting you'd know that you could PM, email, or call me and I would do anything I could to help you. When my little baby hits her teenage years (God help me) I know that you have a teenage daughter and you've probably seen some of these emotional roller-coaster times that she is definitely going to go through.

I think that kind of information is valuable. If it wasn't, I guess I kinda don't see the point in having a Bonfire at all? If people are only using the Bonfire to talk about their jumps and meeting for the next boogie, couldn't that be done in Gen Skydiving and Events?

I'm just wonder how many jumps you need to give advice on how to tape 'Lost' off of the DVR or whatever, man...:P

i voted yes but would like to qualify that by saying as long as they are not posting advice to jumpers in the skydiving forums. Blah Blah Blah, I know there may be former jumpers qualified to give advice but there are also former jumpers that have been gone so long that the sport is not the same anymore.
