lawrocket 3 #1 February 11, 2008 Another freaking brutal hockey injury. Richard Zednick got his neck slashed by a skate. Reminiscent of Clint Malarchuk's slashed jugular about 20 years ago. Both injuries happened in Buffalo. Wishing Zednik a quick recovery. My wife is hotter than your wife.
ACMESkydiver 0 #2 February 11, 2008 How in the HECK does that happen? One guy falls and the other skates over him? ~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action.
lawrocket 3 #3 February 11, 2008 No. His teammate was checked and fell. While he was falling, his leg kicked up right into Zednik's neck and sliced it. My wife is hotter than your wife.

BillyVance 35 #6 February 11, 2008 I've been slashed by a skate. It's not that hard. Present yourself in the right fashion, it'll happen. I was probably 7 years old, skating at the ice rink. I liked to go fast, but didn't have hockey skates, just the usual rentals. Ran into a small group standing on the ice because I couldn't avoid them or stop in time. We all went down. My right hand's laying on the ice. Next thing I know I feel searing pain on my finger as somebody skates over it. I jumped up screaming and holding my hand with blood dribbling over the ice as I ran to get off and up to the front desk. Loooong trail of blood. Dude at the desk didn't know which hand was cut. Anyway, mom takes me to the family doctor for stitches. No anesthetics back then, so they strap me to the board and put the stitches in one by excruciating one. I was hoarse for the rest of the day and my mom had trouble hearing my dad as well. CanuckInUSA 0 #7 February 11, 2008 About 6 years ago something similar happened to me while I was playing in an amateur game. I was in front of the net on offense and the other teams defenseman checked me from behind into the goalie and for whatever reason the goalie was also falling down and I took the goalie's skate right into my face. Fortunately I was wearing a mask (I hate to think what would have happened had I not been wearing a mask) and nothing came of it. The reason why I bring this up is that these incidents aren't as isolated as one would think they could be. In fact I am surprised it doesn't happen more often. In the NHL, they have doctors, dentists and ambulances on sight ready to care for the injured. In an amateur league the arena is staffed with the zambone driver and maybe the pro-shop dude who sharpens your skates. An ambulance (depending on the location of the rink) is 10-60 minutes away. Would Zednick be alive today if he was playing at some local rink. While I don't have one (I used to wear one when I played hockey as a youth), neck protectors could save your life. Food for thought to those of use who play hockey. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
