Even though it's a small blow to the drug trade as a whole and another supplier will just step in, at least SOME kids might not get tempted/coerced for a while. Do you realize that alcohol is a drug and that most kids start their drug use with alcohol? A bit hypocritical it would be."...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." Neil Young
madhatter 0 #11 February 14, 2008 Aaah.. Wine is a LEGAL drug. Abuse of alcohol is also wrong, agreed, but if more parents exposed their kids to alcohol in controlled circumstances, the rebel factor would be less & maybe we won't see so many DUI cases involving teenagers. Maybe even less drug abuse... Damn, I can feel this sliding over to the dark side A VERY MERRY UNBIRTHDAY TO YOU!!! D.S #

madhatter 0 #14 February 14, 2008 So legal & illegal doesn't cut it? Don't you think there's a reason why some substances are controlled, some freely available & some outlawed?A VERY MERRY UNBIRTHDAY TO YOU!!! D.S #

They see their parents drink. They see sport figures touting it. They see their favorite musicians drinking it. Just because it is legal doesn't make it any less worse than cocaine or meth. In a way it makes it worse as some seem to overlook its seriousness as a rite of passage. i would need more than my two hands and feet to count how many people I know who have died from alcohol poisoning, killed by a drunk driver, killed themselves drinking and driving and a few other ways. Alcohol is a very serious and powerful drug that should not be taken lightly solely because it is legal."...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." madhatter 0 #17 February 14, 2008 "In a way it makes it worse as some seem to overlook its seriousness as a rite of passage" I agree with your post entirely, which is why I would like to see the rite of passage or rebel factor, as I called it, downscaled. Teaching people to enjoy alcohol responsibly is a HUGE problem here in SA, as probably all over the world. I would like to see people enjoying the drink, not the feeling they get from guzzling it.A VERY MERRY UNBIRTHDAY TO YOU!!! D.S #

Teaching people to enjoy alcohol responsibly is a HUGE problem here in SA, as probably all over the world. I would like to see people enjoying the drink, not the feeling they get from guzzling it. I agree 100%. I'm not at all a drinker but, I will have one beer after getting my deer during deer season. I also will have a few shots of bourbon throughout the year because I love the taste of Maker's Mark bourbon but, do not like the buzz at all so, I stop at one shot. In the past, however, I was a big drinker. Been sober 13 years this month. Nothing at all wrong with enjoying a drink but, when it gets to the point of guzzling down a bottle of whisky, wine or a case of beer, there seems to be a problem with the person doing so. Especialy when it's a daily event. That was my problem. It went from just having a drink to just getting drunk. I was talking to a lady I know in town the other week about alcohol and she kind of hit it just right when she said about alcohol use being that when you are a teenager, it's rebeling, when you are in your 20's, it's partying, when you are in your thirties, it's just something you do, when you are in your 40's and above, it's just pathetic when you drink like you did when you were in your teens. I am glad they busted the coke ring and I know it's hypocritical but, I wish they would legalize marijuana and use the funds to wipe coke and meth off the face of the planet."...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." madhatter 0 #19 February 14, 2008 Firstly - Congrats on 13 years! It's a very fine line to be walking, but if legalizing & responsible use of a soft drug meant getting the hard stuff off the streets, I'm all for it. The biggest fly in the ointment remains that one word - responsible. A VERY MERRY UNBIRTHDAY TO YOU!!! D.S #
