So I check the refund status on the site, they tell me to call them and enter the extension number... I do that, and all I get is a message stating due to the call volume and the extension number I entered they can not help me at this time and to hang up and call the next business day. I keep doing that, and get the same message. GRRRRRRR.

Anyone have a number to them where a person answers (yes Im dreaming)?

No, but as a point of data I filed on 2/3 and my refund was in my account on 2/15... never bothered to get a status since it was so fast. So if it's less than 2 weeks since you filed (at least this early in the tax season) I'd say don't stress too much about trying to get a status.

Check this out. It has saved me a hell of a lot of time dealing with the fucking automated systems, even more so when I have to use the relay services.

The IRS is listed, down the list as US IRS. Not sure how up to date it is though.

We filed in January. They suck, the refrence code I got is 1201 so Im pretty sure Im being audited.

Which is why we always use a CPA...;)

Went from 52,000 owed to 2400 coming back! B|

I do my own taxes. However, I screwed up two years straight, and the IRS told me they were refunding $1500+/- more to me because I used the wrong tax table. That's a nice mistake to make. :D

I used to work with a woman who got audited. After running her through the wringer with multiple interrogations, they finally proved to their satisfaction that her return was indeed wrong....and they owed her money.:S

Last year they sent me a notice that I had made a mistake, and sent me a small refund I was not expecting. Did some homework and figured out what qualifed dividends means.

Well as long as he isn't a stupid focker, like our last one was. :|

Entered the wrong SS# for our son so we lost the credit for one kid...then he got our friends audited by completely f'ing up their business taxes (which is why we hired him, too :S:S:S). Thank God everything he completely screwed up on ours I have records on and if we got audited, they'd be owing us money back.

It's been 3 years and attorneys & our friends have JUST straightened that sh*t out. >:(

Yeah, it does take some looking to find a good one...word of mouth referrals from friends with similar needs got us with our guy.

He's retired from the IRS, a CPA and an Attorney...actually quite interesting to hear some of the stories he tells! ;)

Edited to add:
H&R Block was the biggest mistake we ever made years ago,
lots of wasted time and money to get things straightened out.
Wasn't until I realized I knew more than the dipstick working there that I got concerned...and by then it was too late. :S

Heck yeah. It took me about 20 minutes the last time we used H&R blockheads with the guy:

Me -"Where's my mileage deduction?"
Him- "You can't deduct mileage, you're an online store."
Me - "I drive to meet clients. I drive for training. Of course I can deduct mileage." :S
Him - "Oh...ok."
Me -"Those theater tickets are deductible. Those were clients that won my drawing."
Him -"I don't think you can deduct theater tickets."
Me - "OMG. Yes I can. 50% at least. Look up 'client entertainment' -Just do it." :S

He was a complete nimrod...[:/]

You're lucky. When I worked the insurance job I was technically "self-employed". It was really just a scam the insurance company was running to get out of paying SS tax. Nevertheless it made income tax complicated as hell, so I followed the advice of the other agents and went to the accountant they recommended.

The damn fool wouldn't listen to anything I told him and insisted I start filing quarterly estimated payments of $X. After I sent in the first one, I started doing some calculations and determined he was full of shit. I skipped the next payment, and at the end of the year did my own taxes. If I had sent in the last payment, the IRS would have need to send all of it back to me.

I have always done my own taxes ever since.

Some years ago, the government sued Microsoft for the same thing, resulting in huge fines, and a 70-million dollar payment to the contractors.

The IRS was investigating my company over that issue when I left. That was way back before college, so I have no idea the outcome.

It is obfuscated in the 1040 Forms & Instructions booklet, (page 33 & 35).
In plain English, (which the IRS carefully avoids):

- If you hold onto a stock over a certain period of time, the dividends will be qualified.

- If the dividends are qualified, then they will be taxed at the lesser of:
a) Your marginal tax rate.
b) The capital gains rate, (currently 15%).

So if your marginal rate is 28%, and you don't go through the hoops of dealing with the qualified dividends issue, you will be paying 28% on them instead of 15%. That was the mistake I made last year that the IRS caught.

You sure are. Your nothing more than a number and a $ to the IRS.

Hopefully this isn't a revelation. There is no law anywhere that states you have to pay taxes on wages for your LABOR. Now if you own a business, or have other revenue, that's a different story. It is how ever mandatory that you file, but you do not have to pay taxes for your labor compensation. Basically all you have to do is file, and if you owe $$$ tell them to basically "Drop Dead" when they retort. The IRS operates by fear, and intimidation, threats and the like. They prey upon the worker's ignorance to get them to pay. They send threatning letters, they threaten to place liens on this and that and the other. It's all a bunch of BS.

I've owned, and operated my own businesses for over 25 years, actually i own 4 different entities all together. I pay myself a salary, that i do not pay taxes on. Because i won my own business, everything i buy to operate my businesses is 90% tax deductable ie: ADVERTISING, my work truck, employees vehichles, i get to have two personal vehichles to write off. I pay my taxes quarterly. At the end of the year, if i owe say $25K-$30K, i simply invest in something, or make a "Capitol Improvement" The best thing for everyone to do is research this whole topic, learn what they know and use it to your advantage, within your rights. And employ a really good CPA!

Good Luck!

has anyone ever successfully won a court case using this defense? if so, i would think that everyone would just be telling the irs where to stick it. last year, however, a couple won a court case with the irs using the defense that the tax code was so complicated that nobody could understand it.
