AggieDave 6 #1 February 19, 2008 Who determined what direction would be east from the south pole. If you're at the south pole and you point in any horizontal direction wouldn't that be north? East and west would make circles around the pole. At least that's what I would think. --"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." BIGUN 1,438 #4 February 19, 2008 The military chooses a line of longitude running through the South Pole and pretends that direction is north. All the other cardinal points are assumed to be the same as normal (ie: east is 90 degrees to the right of north etc...)Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard. Andrewwhyte 1 #5 February 19, 2008 QuoteWho determined what direction would be east from the south pole. No one. There is no such direction. Quote If you're at the south pole and you point in any horizontal direction wouldn't that be north? Yes. However once you have taken one step forward east would be to your right. If you took one step backward east would be to your left. Quote East and west would make circles around the pole. At least that's what I would think. DNE see above. AggieDave 6 #6 February 19, 2008 Actually, yeah, I'm bored a little. Court was reset so now I'm just screwing off on the internet. Although I did order a bit over $3k worth of VW parts. Once they come in I get to start building an engine. This is the engine I've wanted to build for literally 13 years. So beyond that I have nothing else going on today.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."

AggieDave 6 #8 February 19, 2008 This came up from an article I was reading. It was talking about 17 Chinese scientists having had setup an observation camp 700 miles east of the south pole for astronomy observations. They had a picture with a point marked on the map, but it didn't really clear up how they pulled east out of their butt on that one. That and lets say that it was the US military that setup east as a certain direction. Does the rest of the world conform to that choice?--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
Andrewwhyte 1 #9 February 19, 2008 Yah, they are just wrong. If they were right they could re-aquire the pole by heading west. Since west has a defined direction where they are (face the north pole and add 270 degrees) this would get them lost.
Andrewwhyte 1 #10 February 19, 2008 common sense would indicate that scientists would use something like the prime meridian as a reference. BTW if you are anywhere less than ~111.41 miles from the pole and head due east, you will find your own tracks within 700 miles.
FreeflyChile 0 #11 February 19, 2008 Well, isn't the magnetic south pole different from the geographic south pole? so you could be east of one pole given the frame of reference from the other pole.

Andrewwhyte 1 #14 February 19, 2008 It would be very difficult to ascertain the direction of the south magnetic pole from the geographic south pole. The curvature of the lines of magnetic force in that region is acute enough that the compass just spins if you move it a cm.
