The Mosquito

37, worked at the airport for going on 17 years now around jet engines and heard it just fine. For all those who can't hear it consider yourselves extremely fortunate. That sound made me want to claw my eardrums out of my head...

As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...

I just tried it for my 19 year old daughter to hear. I didn't think the speaker was turned up enough, so I turned it up more. All the sudden, she was squirming in the chair with her hands over her ears and yelling at me to turn it off. I still couldn't hear it!

I think it's really strange because I've never been one to walk around with earphones in my ears and thought I had good hearing. I guess not.

I know I have some high-frequency hearing loss in my left ear, so in fact I can hear the noise in my right ear only. Since HF noise is more 'directional' than low frequency noise - i.e. it's easier to tell where it's coming from - I guess for a very high frequency like this one, turning your ear towards the source can make the difference between hearing it and not.

Obviously if you're listening on headphones that doesn't apply! :)

For those wondering just how screwed their hearing is, here's your opportunity to find out:

http://www.ultrasonic-ringtones.com

Not sure how accurate those pitches are, but I could hear up to 14.1kHz in my left ear and 15.8kHz in my right.

By the way, there's an audible click at the beginning and end of each sound file. That doesn't count! ;)
