Just got A Liscense and want my first rig...Where to start?

Recommended Posts

Hey, I just got my A liscence and I am tired of spending lots of money on renting gear especially because I jump EVERY weekend atleast 10 times a day thats 20 times a weekend..and at 20$ per gear rental, I am broke! I need my own Rig! I have been renting a 210 and enjoy the hell out of it. I have been searching on the classifieds to see about them and how much they run? Anyone got one for sell (a complete rig) that is for sale? I really dont know what it is I am supposed to be looking for?
You only call me insane, because you do not hear the music, To which I dance.

Are you making 10 a day and packing for yourself? If not, start packing. It'll slow ya down and save you all kinds of money. :P If you are packing and can still do 10 a day, damn, I'm impressed!

Anyway, talk to your instructors about canopy types and sizes... nobody here can really tell you whats best for you, at least not as far as size goes. Containers are all pretty good, as long as they're fairly new (less than 10 years old). Just gotta find one that fits the canopies you want and has a harness that fits you. That's the hard part, so a lot of people buy new containers and used canopies.

Here is a good place to start.

Using the search function here at dropzone.com is the best place to start in the majority of cases; the sheer numbers of members means that most subjects have been dicussed and rehashed numerous times.

That is why the Forum Guidelines state to do a search before asking -- it may not be necessary to ask the question afterwards, but you will be able to narrow your questions a lot and thereby fill you knowledge bucket that mush more effectively.

Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, more money.

Why do they call it "Tourist Season" if we can't shoot them?

You really should be able to get a break on that gear rental fee, especially if you start talking to a gear dealer that is affiliated with the DZ. After that many jumps where you've already rented, and if they know you're waiting for your own gear, it is not unreasonable, I think, to approach them about working out something.

I realize you jump at San Diego, but I think that Square One (a dealer with a real store and big online presence) at Perris will allow you to jump their rental rigs (which are very good quality, modern stuff) for free while waiting for your rig that you've ordered through them. Because Square One has very competitive prices, it is hard to not go with that deal. If the folks at San Diego realize that you're about to go to Perris to save a lot of money on gear rental, they might decide to do the same for you.

Of course all of that assumes that you buy a new rig, if you're going to buy used, you can obviously get it fast. There are a lot of reasons to try to find quality used gear at your experience level, unless you have lots of money.
People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am

yeah - makes more sense to pay the ~70/day rental fee that Square 1 would charge. Either at Perris, or pushing on San Diego to match or come close. $200/day in rentals is awful.

That rate, btw, allows as many canopy changes as they're willing to give you (based on skill). And S1's rent to own package kicks ass. If I lived in the south, I would have made good use of it.

I'm impressed that you can do 10 off the bat. I find 5 is the good number and 6 is the pushing it number.

Quite right, that is a reasonable daily rate. It is quite reasonable to approach your DZ operator about getting something negotiated. Don't be demanding, just honestly let them realize you have alternatives now that you have your A license.
