2+ Road Lanes are f***ing stupid

Recommended Posts

Why because we kick ass and shouldn't have to pay that much. :D
No the main thing isn't the price itself but more over the act that 3-4 years ago it was under a buck a gallon. Just a sharp increase in price over a short time. I don't own an SUV so I don't care too much. I do own a hot rod that will chug fuel once its finished. [:/]We'll see how I feel about it then.

Sorry, I kind of like them. Even if I'm not in one. They're an attempt to get people to behave in a way that the government would like them to, using a carrot rather than a stick (although traffic could be considered a stick, just consider that we've had traffic all along, and the improvement from turning the 2+ lane into a general lane would be transient).

Yes, they'd like you to change your behavior. The result of doing so would be less traffic for everyeone. The freeway I use most is half again as wide as it was 25 years ago, and more crowded. Turning it into 4, or 6, or 8 lanes each way wouldn't solve the problem, it would just defer it, and create others along the way.

Unfettered freedom has a cost, too.

The UK pays about $8usd a gallon.

Right. And while I don't know for sure, I'd bet that most Brits choose to share rides or use public transportation instead of driving solo.

Nope.. because it is simply not p[ractical for MOST people. I for example do not live anywhere near any other folks that I work with and I don't know beyond a day or so, which site I'm going to be working at.

*sorry to spew some smug* but...

i get to rqide the HOV by myself for owning a hybrid...

but i rarely travel anywhere alone.

oh those in the uk that pay that "8 USD a gallon" yeah if you converted USD to pounds then yes the convesion rate would say 8 USD... but at 3-4 pounds a gallon, you are right on par with the rest of the world, cuz the UK spends the pound like the US spends a dollar, so a pack of smokes is still 4pounds/dollars the difference is where the exchange happens.

i had another point but i forget what i was gonna say:|

they might have a use, but i've never had any luck with them. i was travelling through hartford, ct (i think) and i jumped into the carpool lane. got behind a guy who was going 5+ mph under the speed limit and i couldn't pass because there was only one lane. look off to my right and everyone over there was zooming along at 10+ mph over the limit. >:( to make it worse, there was at least a lane's worth of real estate wasted to separate the car pool lane from the regular traffic.

in los angeles, i noticed that in some places two is considered a carpool, then all of a sudden you need 3. [unsure] might work if you're from there and know where the changes happen, but it sucks for a tourist.

Carpool lanes are completely stupid. The intent is to reduce the number of drivers using their own car by means of sharing. Let's look at the users of carpool lanes.

80% - solo drivers breaking the rule (yeah, that helps)

10% - Single parent with a kid (Yeah :S, lucky we have that carpool lane or else the 5 year old would have driven to daycare separately)

5% - People on the same work crew (they would drive together anyway)

3% - Busses - but they break the rules all the time - screw them - they drive on the shoulder, cut in front of regular traffic, stop for no reason - hazzards, all of them

1% - Married couples that work at the same place (they would drive together anyway)

0.5% - cops driving solo.....

0.5% - actual carpoolers driving their SUVs - smug fools

so all this for the sake of taking 3 perfectly usable lanes with less congestion, and forcing all the traffic to sit at a stand still in 2 lanes pumping out exhaust fumes - all the while having solo rulebreakers scream by the 5 mph traffic at 70mph - only separated by inches

once again - these wierdos try to fix a problem and only, in fact, make that exact problem even worse. But at least the traffic tickets generate a little income while backing up traffic even worse.

good intentions, just a complete inability to link reality to the consequences of not thinking things through

oh yeah, let's add these to the list - why does that make sense at all? are the hybrids too small to take a 2nd passenger?

NUTS

Call me cynical, but I think you might have put your finger on it there.

I believe there are plans for carpool lanes in the UK to be fitted with cameras that recognise if there's anyone in the passenger seat or not. No second bod in the photo = ticket in the mail.B|

Bill, we're agreeing more and more..... where's the fun in that;)

I kind of like the cartoon bubble where we eliminate the HOVs and suddenly there's a ton of 3 and 5 years olds driving their own car - all because the Humvee/SUV/minivan driving soccor moms don't have the social pressure of the HOVs lanes to "SAVE THE PLANET"

Well, like all laws there has to be enforcement. When I lived in Vancouver the number of SOVs in the carpool lane was definitely below 10%. The penalties are harsh. You should lobby your lawmakers to increase enforcement and penalties in order to make the public investment more effective.

Cutting in front of regular traffic is specifically legal in most cities. Stopping for no reason is only a hazard if you are tail-gating or not paying attention.

As I understood it carpool lanes were built to fight congestion with any pollution effects to be serendipitous. The carpooling SUV is completely legit.

>So, the 2+ lane is empty and the rest of the road packed . . .

Not for long. Around here, they are as full as the rest of the lanes, just (usually) moving faster.

HOV lanes aren't there to make some people "special." They are there to improve the carrying capacity of the road. It's a way to get two lanes worth of traffic in one lane.

1 - it's a failed concept
2 - it goes so far as to make what was hypothesized even worse
3 - a typical response would be - "If we only do it MORE, or put more money into it. THEN it'll work like we thought...." Thanks for that.

I'm still waiting on the candidate that says, "if you vote for me, you'll get a pass to your very own special lane to drive in" - it's the same thing.
