craigslist scam alert

Recommended Posts

I was looking at cars on craigslist and came across a deal too good to be true but emailed the poster for details. This was his response. Google the VIN and you'll see what I saw. Nice of the military to ship the car to me free.

Hello and sorry for my delay,
I'm SGT David Peterson. This Civic is in perfect working condition. This detailed vehicle makes the exterior look like it just came off the assembly line. The car has 39k miles. VIN Number: 1HGES26752L068524
It was never involved in any accident, not even minor ones. The body and paint are great. The interior is super clean, mechanically, it runs like a cat on carpet.

As I know that my current situation is pretty special I want the deal closed only through eBay's Buyer Protection Program in order for you to be 100% protected. You will make the payment to eBay and they will hold the money until you receive the car. ONLY AFTER you receive the car and you inspect it (for 10 days) eBay will release the payment to me; in this way we are both protected. Anyway i am sure that if you will don`t be satisfied about the car i will surely find another buyer in your area and there will be no need for you to ship the car back. I am located in London, United Kingdom and I was sent here to improve the military relationships between USA and UK. One month ago, my wife moved here with me and brought the car with her, but now we have to sell it back in the United States because we can't register it here; it has US specs and everything, and registering it here in Europe will take for ever. My final price on it is US 2,960 $. If you will take it for this price, I am willing to handle the shipping. It will be shipped from here by plane with US Air Military Cargo so it will not cost me anything. You will get it to the nearest airport in your area and then it will be trucked forward to your place. You will receive the car in about 3 days. Please get back to me asap if you decide to buy, and include in your e-mail your full name and address where you want it shipped so I can start the deal with eBay. You will receive all the transaction payment and shipping details from them.
Best Regards,
David and Elizabeth Peterson

PM sent. Reported 5 owners, with the last purchase only four months ago. Fleet vehicle, sold at auto auction, 175,000 miles.

Anyone in the market for a car - I can't stress enough, buy the carfax or autocheck report. It's only $20 or $30, and you get unlimited checks for 30 or 60 days. About 1/3 of the private parties that I met were complete liars. The last one was only a few weeks ago - kid said he "bought" the car from the original owner a year and half ago, and it never had any problems. The autocheck record said 4 owners, the kid really acquired it two weeks previous, and it had been in an accident (those reports show the police records as well as salvage titles, fleet use, and all the other nasty things).

There are a lot of otherwise unemployed people that are making side income by buying used cars, getting them detailed, lying about their history, and marking up the price of the vehicle.

Carfax doesn't always work. >:( Years ago I bought a used car from a dealer and got the carfax report on it. The report said no accidents and that it was always titled in my state. I later learned by looking over the car and having some alignment issues that it was wrecked heavily on the front end by the owner in another state.

I bitched enough to the dealer that they fixed the problems I was having. I got lucky. ;)

The accident report only works if the accident was filed to the police. The reports get pulled from the police records. Personally, I prefer autocheck to carfax - it's $5 cheaper, you get 60 days, instead of 30. But there's no guarantees that the reports will find everything - required government filings (such as emissions tests/title transfer, police reports) will show up. Things that aren't required to be filed do not. If someone was involved in a single-car accident, didn't file it, had a tow-truck driver tow it, and have a mechanic fix it, it's not going to get reported anywhere. Even if the VIN is entered incorrectly in the report, or someone was just too lazy to file, or if the records are lost or damaged, you won't get that back in the report.

Overall, there seem to be quite a few private parties as well as dealers scamming used car sales (at least in my experience) - you are going to do better with a car report than without.

I've been looking at Craigslist shopping for a car for my daughter. It's amazing how many scams I see - both from sellers AND from buyers. Most scammers will only deal with you by e-mail, and refuse to meet you or give you their phone number. Seller-scammers offer to ship you a car on approval after you pay a deposit. The car never arrives, and your "deposit" is gone. Buyer-scammers will try to pay you with a certified check, or Western Union, etc. Basically exactly as all those rig scams Sangiro posts on here.

Here's what I do: I Google the e-mail address the seller gives on Craigslist. It's amazing how many times this will turn up the exact same ad, for the exact same car, at a dozen different cities all over the country.

Bottom line: make all sales.purchases local, in-person, with cash only.

Oh, and excellent point about subscribing to autocheck and carfax. Do it!

Hello and sorry for my delay,

The car is in a perfect cosmetic and engine condition and meticulously maintained. No damage, no scratches or dents, no hidden defects, the engine runs and sounds awesome, never been into accidents and it is as advertised.
It has 89,100 miles. VIN: 3VWSC29M9XM060784

The only problem is my curent situation. I was an US Air Force reserve and I was recently recalled to serve in Croatia. One month ago, my wife moved here with me and brought the car with her, but now we have to sell it back in the United States because In order to be able to register this car here, I would have to pay very high import/custom taxes.
My final price on it is $ 2950. If you will take it for this price, I am willing to handle the shipping. It will be shipped from here by plane via US Military Cargo so it will not cost me anything. You will get it to the nearest airport in your area and then it will be trucked forward to your place.

As I know that my current situation is pretty special I want the deal closed only through eBay's Buyer Protection Program in order for you to be 100% protected. You will make the payment to eBay and they will hold the money until you receive the car. ONLY AFTER you receive the car and inspect it (for 10 days) eBay will release the payment to me; in this way we are both protected. If the car is not how i described it, you will be fully refunded, upon the return of the item in original condition (return postage at my expense). It will be insured during transportation and will be delivered at your front door in maximum 1 week.

Please get back to me asap if you decide to buy, and include in your e-mail your full name and address where you want it shipped so I can start the deal with eBay. You will receive all the transaction payment and shipping details from them.

Thank you, and have a nice day,
SSGT Jason Bennett

considering the value of the US Dollar in relation to most European currencies, my guess is he would get MORE selling it in Europe.

Just goes to show how corrupt the US military and its members are.

This scammer is likely not associated with the US military at all.
