Injured Rotator Cuff (Revisited)

Recommended Posts

Ok, so it has been a few months now since I've injured my arm. For the most part it is no longer a problem, however I've noticed recently that after I do some weight lifting in the gym it'll hurt that day, & will remain for a day or 2 after. It's not really "pain" per say - but just enough to make me remember that it happened. I'm not really concerned (unless I should be...? :S)

When I went to the doc, he said: "this [shot of cortisone] should take care of it, BUT it can either: A) always hurt a bit, or B) be on-again, off-again kinda' thing." Well, it looks like the latter, & while I can live with this, I just wanted to make sure I don't do anything to somehow make it worse. Do any of you have experience with this kind of injury? - if so, how (if at all) has it effected your jumping?

I'm hoping that as I build muscle around the area, the pain will no longer resurface.

I'm really pissed, that something as stupid as a fall in the bathroom can be this much of an inconvenience. >:(

How is the range of motion, overall strength and what is the level of pain? That's what you need ask yourself. If your motion is limited and the arm is significantly weaker, that could be a problem. But, from what you describe, it sounds like everything is getting better and you aren't terribly limited.

You've got a couple of months before its REALLY jumpable in the Chicago area anyway! Gotta love springtime in Chicago- once it gets warm enough to jump comfortably, the winds pick up and stay that way until mid to late May! :P

I had a torn rotator cuff about 20 years ago. It took two years to feel whole at the gym again. Even at six months, I could do most of my workout, but had to be careful not to use the full weight I'd been used to pre-injury. Reduce those exercises that focus on the shoulder with more reps less weight - Take your time, don't overdo it and if it starts hurting; let it rest,

Last year, I got trashed on a dive and tore the rotator again, plus injured the center deltoid, plus ruptured the bursa sac. From the previous experience, I know it'll be two years till I'm whole again. The real fun part of this one was when I raised my arm over my head, the damn thing would click and lock in place and I'd have to use the other arm to unlock it.

I can't take the shot since I have an adverse reaction to it, so I just accept it will take longer and take it easy on the arm. Its been eight months this time and I feel like I'm about 60-70% whole - seems like the last 30-40% takes twice as long as the first 60-70. The good news is I have a cooler story than falling in the potty. ;)

The really good news is you didn't dislocate a shoulder. Fellow skydiver in the neighborhood dislocated his in a motorcycle accident... Made a skydive about 6 months later and the damn thing popped out in freefall. Waited a couple of months and while at WFFC the damn thing popped out again in plain old freefall. In both cases, (Right arm) he had to go straight to reserve. He decided he couldn't keep doing that, so he got his pilot ratings and is now one of our jump pilots...

Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.

I still have a full range of motion, and as for the pain - on the days it does hurt it's only maybe a 2 and only at certain points while rotating and/or extending.

Yea but it isnt know as the windy city because of the wind ;)

You're quite right. If I remember correctly, the nick name has something with the up & coming business districts & the amount of money that used to flow through here so many years ago.

Wow, I did pay attention in school some. :o

I'm just saying you have a little time to heal that shoulder! B|

I'll be lucky if I get in the air at all this season [:/] (other than doing tandems.) Hopefully, when I go back to the tunnel in July I'll show enough improvement to be cleared for AFF.

It was odd to feel pain when only lifting 15 lbs or so.

When I mentioned that to someone, their response was that I was going with too much weight, too soon.
I have been doing 3 sets of 20 reps with 5 lb weights now.

I started using 3 lb weights.

Do these exercises

Before doing any chest or shoulder exercises, take the time to do the exercises shown. It makes a tremendous difference.

Also, for bench or overhead press, stay very light.
I was benching 215 on a chest machine and dropped back to 50 lbs and more reps.

Thanks for the link, Bill, I really appreciate it - will try these out.

As for the weight - I don't think I'm lifting too much, only about 20 lbs, which is the norm for me. Also, I only feel odd in the left arm, which is the 1 with the rotator cuff in question, which makes me think that this is specifically linked to the incident from a few months ago & not necessarily too much weight. However, I may very well be wrong. Whatever the cause I just hope it doesn't interfere with jumping. Again, it's only pain from time to time, and at a level I can live with - I don't see it being a problem. I'll let you know how I feel in a few weeks after I do those exercises.

I highly recommend to start out with no more than a 5lb weight for these exercises. I think that just needs to be emphasized more. Thats a great link.
