iluvtofly 0 #1 March 1, 2008 not for me but for people I work with. To say it was an emotional day is an understatement. It all started at 6am with a fully involved house fire. A woman ran back into the house to save her dog. She ended up perishing in the fire. Meanwhile 2 firefighters ran into the house hoping to save her. When they got up to the 2nd floor there was a flash and they were both knocked out. The one firefighter was taken to the hospital, treated and released. The other...well...he is the brother of one of the guys I work with. He was flown down to a burn center in Pittsburgh with 2nd degree burns on over 50% of his body. After several hours of surgery we got a report that he would probably make it but might lose all his fingers. Well, we just got another update that they ended up having to cut his stomach open to relieve the pressure and at this point it's not looking good. On top of that, during the fire, we had to take the guy I work with's grandfather from a nursing home to the hospital in respiratory distress. Later in the afternoon we got word that he passed away. So in 1 day a guy I work with lost his grandfather and very well could lose his brother. As if all that wasn't enough, found out today that another person I work with had to put her teenage son on suicide watch last night. Needless to say it was a VERY emotional day. So please...vibes to those I work with would be greatly appreciated. For an official article on the fire go to http://www.wpxi.com/news/15447327/detail.html The pictures say it all. kschilk 0 #2 March 1, 2008 Damn, that's tragic...that's gotta' be tough to deal with. Hoping for the best, for the injured and deepest condolences, to all those affected. I don't know anyone involved but I probably go by that house, on my way to the dz. Sounds like a chimney fire, they usually go up quick. "T'was ever thus." AggieDave 6 #3 March 1, 2008 That's sad. That's also incredibly selfish! She put those firefighters in serious jeopardy, more so then they were in due to her selfish act of trying to save an animal. Due to considering her animal's life over the lives of others she now leaves two public servants in a situation where they may very well be disabled for life. Sure they're firefighters, its their job; however, they were doing their job just fine until she decided to act so selfishly. --"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." iluvtofly 0 #4 March 1, 2008 The really sad thing was had she taken the time to look she would've seen that her dog had run out the back door to a neighbors yard. Though I do feel weary about commenting on what people do in those situations. You know how you would like to to think you'd act in that situation but you never truly know until you're actually in that situation.

You know how you would like to to think you'd act in that situation but you never truly know until you're actually in that situation. Yeah, I know what you mean. I revert to training when presented with peculiar and high stress situations, but many people don't have the luxury of being able to revert to the same thing. And I'm not as highly trained as others who may react calmer and in a better manner. It would have to be a person for me to put myself in a compromising situation. I'm not saying that I wouldn't necessarily put myself in a high risk situation, I know better. My entire professional life is built around high risk situations; however, I'm all about the people. Animals? Not so much. Either way its really hard on everyone around and involved. From the friends and family of the deceased to the friends, family and coworkers of the firefighters. If anything hopefully this tragedy will come to someone's mind when presented with a high stress situation and that person will make a good decision.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." tbrown 26 #6 March 1, 2008 I'll pray for all of your friends, what an awful day. Soundslike it's been hard on you too, even though you're out on the periphery of these events. So I'll toss in a prayer for you too. Your humble servant.....Professor Gravity !
iluvtofly 0 #7 March 1, 2008 Thank you. Though I was not directly involved in the whole situation, I didn't sleep much because I was worried about my coworkers. I can't even begin to image what they're going through right now. Most of the people I work with are involved with the volunteer fire departments. The mood at work was deffinately a somber one yesterday.
iluvtofly 0 #8 March 4, 2008 I am bumping this because the family needs vibes more now than ever. I just got word that the injured firefighter is not doing well at all. He lost both of his hands, he has gotten a severe infection from the burns and his organs are shutting down. So please, vibes, prayers, whatever you believe in would be greatly appreciated. AggieDave 6 #11 March 5, 2008 That really sucks! Now I'm even more upset about the women's selfishness.I hope his family's pain fades quickly so they can celebrate the life he lived. --"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." iluvtofly 0 #13 March 5, 2008 OK...here's the crazy thing. I got text messages from 2 different people (one of whom was at the hospital) at 8:30pm saying he had passed away. I just got to work and found out that shortly after that his heart started beating again ON IT'S OWN and he's still alive as of right now. Talk about having a will to live. He is one hell of a fighter.

iluvtofly 0 #15 March 5, 2008 Unfortunately Brad passed away (officially and for good) at 530am. This time there was no crazy miracle of his heart just starting on its own again. I just want to say thank you to all the people who sent me PM's and messages in this thread with their well wishes. It really meant alot.

iluvtofly 0 #18 March 5, 2008 I think part of what makes this so hard is that he was the FIRST EVER firefighter to die in the line of duty in this county.
