Paying it forward

I am looking at getting a new altimiter from the guys at free fall accessories. They are really nice and have a warrenty and such and only cost a little more than an alti3. So I was thinking what to do with my old altimeter. I could sell it, and I am sure it would sell pretty quickly, but I know what it is like to be a very broke new skydiver. I am not rick, but I have a nice paycheck so I figure I'd splurge. Then I figure I'll donate my old alti to some broke low time jumper. I figure I'll send it to be calibrated just so that it is in tip top condition for whomeve is lucky enough to recieve this alti from me. Now the question is, how do I choose who gets it?

Ummm hmmmmm we call it "paying it skyward" in the SkyFest world. Do like Keith Laub did last year after buying the 3 SF custom alitimeters in the auction. Give it to an SCR maggot!! We like maggots, they buy beer!!

Well I didn't want to steal your thunder there J... lol.

Speaking of SCR can we do one with all anvils

No thunder to be taken, it just adds to the whole concept of the event. But of course it does sound like you have some other fun ideas in this thread.

Anvil SCR sure!! Hell if I dont get off my ass I might qualify by then. LOL

Here is what I did. My rigger is also an AFF instructor.

She looked at my old main and said that it was in good condition. I was getting a new one.

I told her to pick out a new student (one that would probably stay in the sport for a while) and give it to them. They could get 300 jumps out of it and then make their own plans.

She did. I suggest that you do the same.

Ask your S&TA or AFF instructors to pick out a new student who seems to have a serious interest in the sport.

Hey, I know a little about paying it forward. It was done for me, and I've done it quite a few times, even on big ticket skydiving items, though I'll not go into specifics here. I most certainly do still pay it forward, but seeing as how one container that left my possesion earlier is STILL sitting in a closet without so much as a reserve in it, I now am pretty wary of just giving. I still give, as I said, but I don't "give away."

I have a couple of spare rigs, and a crap load of spare altimeters. They are mine. Period. I watch. I listen. When someone is in need, I loan! No charge. Use it as long as you need (on a day by day basis) until you can afford your own. Works for me. This way I get to help out a much greater number of up and coming jumpers. :)

Hey, could I do an anvil SCR and anvil qualifier in the same jump? I definitely meet the requirements for anvil. ;)

I dont have any ideas, but I think this is so awesome! Way to go! Paying it forward has worked for me and it is something I will always try to do. My pay it forward story is pretty good, so if anyone wants to hear it, PM me and I will tell you! Good luck on finding the lucky recipient.:)
