shropshire 0 #1 March 5, 2008 Anyway, I just finished Charley Boorman's - Race to Dakar (bloody excellent, by-the-way), so what should I pick up now, to read on my holidaty next week? (.)Y(.) BGill 0 #5 March 5, 2008 I just finished "Ultramarathon Man - Confessions of an All Night Runner" by Dean Karnazes. Really good read about ultramarathon running that is pretty inspiring and has some decent humor scattered through it too. One of my favorite books right now. That's my recommendation. nerdgirl 0 #11 March 5, 2008 Quote so what should I pick up now, to read on my holidaty next week? I just got a bunch delivered to me - I love the library! Sharon Weinberger's Imaginary Weapons: A Journey through the Pentagon's Scientific Underworld looks like a easy and entertaining read. Interview from the Daily Show. Also got Ethics and Weapons of Mass Destruction ... but not sure if that's typical holiday reading. /Marg Act as if everything you do matters, while laughing at yourself for thinking anything you do matters. NWFlyer 2 #13 March 5, 2008 Oh, and if you want a nice contrast, read Sir Edmund Hillary's account of his first Everest summit, High Adventure."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
JackC 0 #14 March 5, 2008 Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman by Richard Feynman is a great read. BASE66 by Jevto Dedijer Simon Jakeman's Groundrush (if you can find it). You could always go with some classic Jack Kerouac, I liked The Dharma Bums.

NWFlyer 2 #16 March 5, 2008 Quote Are you thinking of summiting something this year?? Oh hell no. I just like reading about other people crazy enough to do so. I read the Viesturs book a few years ago and it seemed to be the type of thing shropshire would like given that he liked the Charley Boorman book (I've read one of his other books). I just picked up the Hillary book when Sir Edmund passed away recently. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. Amazon 7 #17 March 5, 2008 I have been thinking about it.. I would love to get back into the shape needed to do it.. and not be a burden to the group. I miss those days.. but I think my current health will prevent me from ever doing a summit again.
NWFlyer 2 #18 March 5, 2008 Well, if you want to have some vicarious armchair mountaineer fun, go read the Hillary book because it's *such* a contrast to the more modern stories of Everest. For his expedition, just getting to base camp is half the adventure. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. Amazon 7 #19 March 5, 2008 Nowadays "Base Camp" is a total freakin zoo compared to 30 years ago even.... at 17500 ft... its more than 3000' higher than Mt Rainier.

If you liked that (and are looking for a similar type read) then I highly, highly, highly recommend Jonny Bealby Running with the Moon. One man's solo, independant, unsupported motorbike circuit of Africa (the whole thing). Makes the Paris Dakar runners look like a bunch of soft pampered poofters (in fact he crosses paths with the Rally - they get to sail round a warzone while he has to ride through it). Also has a bunch of personal rebirth/redemption/rediscovery-as-a-result-of-said-journey stuff thrown in. But in a good way.Do you want to have an ideagasm?
