New rig, legstraps hurt

Recommended Posts

I've searched and found many threads about legstraps causing pain, but these were all different. The common case seems to be an improperly fitting harness, and bruised inner thighs.

I got a new rig which fits me like a glove. It happens to be an Icon but I am positive that has nothing to do with it. Basically, I am experiencing a lot of pain from my legstraps digging into my, er, pelvic zone I guess is the best way to describe it. I'm not getting my balls crushed or anything like that (which would be unbearable obviously). But it's definitely not my thighs... it's like it's just past my thighs, on the edge of a bone which I guess is my pelvis. The pain on opening was pretty bad, and then sitting in the harness it was almost like the legstraps were riding up too high (and I could not manage to reposition them no matter what I tried) and the pain was constant for the whole canopy ride (and worse when I turned and increased the line loading, obviously).

Any ideas? Seems I need the straps to sit a bit lower. I had them pretty tight, it seemed like the same tightness I used on my old rig (also custom fit) and that worked fine there.

I started wearing Bike compression shorts on student status because the leg straps hurt. My custom Wings rigs are plenty comfortable even without them, but the compression shorts allow the straps to move without binding any other fabric.

I'm no expert, obviously, but it sounds to me like the MLW might be too short. I am far too long into the torso for the student rigs my DZ has, and that's how I always felt before I got my custom rig.

I may however, be wrong, and in fact probably am.

This is kind of hard to describe, so I'll go draw an illustration, but are your leg straps near perpendicular to your thigh, or are they at a large angle from perpendicular?

Illustration is done, and masterfully so:

Do the legstraps fit more like A, or B?

111, Grue is onto something, put on your jumpsuit and cinch your rig down exactly like you would jump it, have someone take a side picture and email it to Aerodyne (post it up here too).
It sure sounds like your main lift web is short, the side shot should show what angle your horizontal strap is at (some call it the lateral).
Also is there a big gap between the upper legpad and the lower when it is cinched up to jump? At RI we recommend 1" max and 1/2" min.
my previous rigs were about the same (Javs and Vectors).
The horizontal should be almost level or slightly down and the hip ring should be close to the center of your hip or -slightly- forward
You didn't measure yourself did you?

Also, you may have to rotate your leg straps a bit to put them in the proper position.

Crank them down hard and move them around to see where the "comfort zone" is.

When you gear up to skydive, tighten them snuggly, but not painfull and rotate them to that "comfort zone".

I saved the measurements from when RWS measured me 2 years ago for my Vector (which fits great). I measured myself for the Icon, compared the numbers to the RWS measurements, and they were nearly identical. I added 1/2" to the chest and waist measurements (slightly less skinny now), and left the torso and leg unchanged.

The rig seems to fit almost identically to the Vector. The amount of space between leg strap ends is about the same (about 1" I think). The hip rings are SLIGHTLY higher (less than 1" difference).

I tried that as much as possible, but I jump wingsuits and don't always have access to my legstraps after zipping up. I never had to put too much effort into "placing" the legstraps on my last rig.

Try wearing the leg straps a little looser, so you can adjust how you sit in the harness under canopy.

80% of jumpers wear their leg straps too tight.

Derek

I'm tightening them as much as I did on my last rig. I usually jump wingsuit and have no problem with that setting (the wingsuit is one reason it's hard for me to shift while under canopy). However, when I do the rare belly or tracking jump, sometimes I feel the legstraps moving around and before pulling have to reach back and make sure they're placed right (this was all on the Vector) - this would lead me to believe I keep them too loose if anything. But I do get them pretty snug on the ground.

I will experiment with different tightness settings, and I will also be seeing the Aerodyne rigger this weekend to see if we can figure anything out.

It may have just been a fluke and won't happen this weekend... who knows. I figured I'd ask anyway.
