Best sum up EVER :)

If Dr. Laura and Ann Coulter had a celebrity death match where they had to fight to the death, I'll watch. :D

I'm pretty sure their only interest is selling a product and making more money.

I am sure what they do take in to consideration is this. That if there has to be someone who is belittled in the commercial it will be the white person with a dick because if they don’t do that they will be an outrage and portest. Apparently it is only ok to make fun of white guys, and if there are only African Americans in the commercial the one with the penis is shown to be the one who just doesn’t get it.

And I'm guessing that the men who are great inventors and innovators are not spending much time watching TV, so they're probably not the target audience

That’s a lot of “guessing”, and “probably” for me to comment. I don’t know if only dumb people watch TV or that inventors and innovators don’t watch TV. Can’t really say.

I've also noticed that most commercials for cleaning products are still aimed at women and show women doing all of the housework. Which doesn't really go along with your idea that most commercials in the US are aimed at belittling men.

I think doing a Job is not belittling someone, and this is a free country no one can make a person clean do to there sex. I don’t see people who clean there homes or vacuum as belittling I do it all the time. If the Women were made to look stupid or unaware I see that as belittling. That is what is done to men everyday on TV.

Who fucks up the financial decision the guy, Who made the stupid mistake at tax time the guy, etc.

It is overwhelmingly against the guys, and not only this sexiest it is a common occurrence in every day TV.

Oh, I don't doubt that such commercials exist, but I don't think that "almost every commercial on TV" falls into that category (as Darius claimed).

I just fixed it just for you.:)

Thanks. I feel special now. :P

And I see what you're saying. I guess I just don't pay too much attention to the "message" in commercials because in most of them the message is simply "buy our product." I've noticed a few where the guy is portrayed as an idiot, and I don't relate to those since I don't consider most of the men in my life to be idiots. I just brush them off as being as stupid as most of the other commercials on TV, and I assume they're aimed at someone other than me.

you should call her and ask about her early life, the photos and how she got where she is today. See how many nano seconds it takes before she hangs up on you.

Interesting. Care to share the story?

"Dr. Laura" is one of those who has firsthand experience in those things she warns other women about.

See, back in the early 70's, there was a talk show host who was a forefather of the Leykis and Stern genres of racy radio (Leykis and Stern are nothign alike). She started off as a caller to Ballance's radio show (kinda like a Howard Stern Wack Packer). And started an affair with him. She even posed for several NSFW photos. Oh yeah, she was married. Thus achieving her start in radio.

Then she hooked up with a professor. Oh, yeah - HE was married. She "shacked up" with him and got pregnant.

Several people I knew in radio really didn't like her much. The sweet on air personality was radically different from her off-air shrewdness.

It's like Ann Landers and Dear Abby - great givers of advice, but were sisters who were not on speaking terms.

While it's extremely hypocritical, maybe that's why she's so against it now? Maybe she realized the mistakes she made and is trying to help other people not do it?

I dunno. *shrug*

Yes. Possible. But there is a hint of dishonesty to it, as well.

She was NEVER, EVER up front with it. She refused to acknowledge these things until confronted with them.

Despite her on-air personality, she is an extremely shrewd businesswoman and personality. This continues to this day.

Think Limbaugh - moral beacon but drug addict.
Think Spitzer - a moral and ethical champion and personal reprobate of these things.

ARTHUR:
Cut down a tree with a herring? It can't be done.
KNIGHTS OF NI:
Aaaaugh! Aaaugh!
HEAD KNIGHT:
Augh! Ohh! Don't say that word.
ARTHUR:
What word?
HEAD KNIGHT:
I cannot tell, suffice to say is one of the words the Knights of Ni cannot hear.
ARTHUR:
How can we not say the word if you don't tell us what it is?
KNIGHTS OF NI:
Aaaaugh!
ARTHUR:
Sir Robin!
ROBIN:
My liege! It's good to see you.
HEAD KNIGHT:
Now he's said the word!
ARTHUR:
Surely you've not given up your quest for the Holy Grail?
MINSTREL: [singing]
He is sneaking away and buggering up--
ROBIN:
Shut up! No, no. No. Far from it.
HEAD KNIGHT:
He said the word again!
KNIGHTS OF NI:
Aaaaugh!
ROBIN:
I was looking for it.
KNIGHTS OF NI:
Aaaaugh!
ROBIN:
Uh, here-- here in this forest.
ARTHUR:
No, it is far from this place.
KNIGHTS OF NI:
Aaaaugh!
HEAD KNIGHT:
Aaaaugh! Stop saying the word! The word...
ARTHUR:
Oh, stop it!
HEAD KNIGHT:
...we cannot hear! Ow! He said it again!
ARTHUR:
Patsy!
HEAD KNIGHT:
Wait! I said it! I said it!
[clop clop clop]
Ooh! I said it again! And there again! That's three 'it's! Ohh!
KNIGHTS OF NI:
Aaaaugh!...

Bingo. The fear of being alone is greater than being manipulated and controlled (or battered). :S

I don’t think it is just Dr. L.
I think it is the whole culture in the US. Male hating is all over the place. Well maybe not hating but belittling.

Have you noticed how almost every commercial on TV (That belittle someone or make fun of someone) the guy in the commercial is always the dumb ass and the woman is always the one making the right decisions or correcting her husband.

One of the best articles that I've read correlates the image to class, not gender. click

Men on Dynasty (wealthy) are portrayed as intelligent, ruthless, powerful. Middle class men guide people within their house.

It is the representation of working class men where men are characterized as well-intentioned bumblers who are saved by a patient wife while being demeaned by everyone, including their children.

In terms of recent tv shows:
King of Queens
Everybody loves Raymond
According to Jim
King of the Hill (cartoon)

The Damon Wayons and Bernie Mac shows have better father imagery.

I don't know what "IT" is either. (Which probably explains my singleton status. ;))

I believe that it is one of the terms constructed of vapor. You see it everywhere. People can't explain something in a rational fashion, so the response is, "It's a ---- thing, you wouldn't understand."

The definition is totally malleable. Conveniently applied when the listener is struggling to please the speaker.

People need to quit struggling. I like to let discussions drop until people can communicate.
