Did a tornado pass over the Georgia Dome tonight?

Recommended Posts

I was watching the SEC men's basketball tournament on the CW channel, the Alabama-Mississippi State quarterfinal game with 2:11 left in OT and then a roar like a locomotive was heard inside with scaffolding and the scoreboard swinging with ripples showing in the dome skin. That was wild. 45 minutes later and they haven't resumed the game. They're saying there's damage to the building, but not structurally.

The only other time I ever saw something affect a game was the Bay Area World Series earthquake.

See, God hates the south.

Praise the Yankee!!!!!!!!!!!!!

God doesn't single out any specific areas. I hear the yankees get some mighty bitter cold blizzards in the winter and once in a while gets a power outage in NYC in the middle of the summer. :P

No matter where you are, there's something bad going on. :P

Yes, it appears that a tornado -- minimally major wind damage -- took out a small part of the Georgia Dome. The images of damage appear similar to typical tornado damage from the midwest - extremely localized along what resembles the path of a small tornado. No deaths or major injuries reported. Play resumed at the Georgia Dome. The storm did major damage to the CNN Building, the adjacent Omni hotel, Centennial Olympic Park - hotel room chairs propelled into the streets. :o

I'm in the Buckhead area ... north of that area - had small hail, lots of rain, lightening, no apparent damage.

Oh, come on, that was damn funny.

Must be a Cleveland thing. THen again, I am the only guy around these parts that makes boiled peanuts.
And might I add that I'm typing this under about 25" of snow?

Boiled peanuts are made in Alabama too... :D

News reports are saying many of the high rise buildings in downtown Atlanta have blown out windows. So a lot of wide spread damage... Should be interesting for the fans leaving the GA dome tonight.

Wouldn't surprise me, particularly the buildings west of the 1-75/1-85 connector (where the Georgia Dome, CNN building, Omni Hotel & Georgia State University are).

The major skyscrapers to the east of the downtown connector (1-75/1-85) remain illuminated, which would suggest minimal damage as well as a small tornado on the Northside Dr/MLK Dr area to the freeway (Grady curve).

[Edit to add: local CBS affiliate, which has 'slideshow' of damage]

The wind damage to the GA Dome was due to the fact that Bama sucks so bad there was a pressure differential in the building

Early reports were wrong (like they often are) There was no tornado downtown. The wind damage to the GA Dome was due to the fact that Bama sucks so bad there was a pressure differential in the building:P

Ah, I see... Well I feel sorry for the UGA basketball team having to play their game at Georgia Tech's arena, NOT! :D

I live near Dobbins Air base. The tornado warnings have been sounding for the last 30 minutes.
Another storm is headed our way. I guess we all wished a little too hard rain. :S

Yeah, that one passed by 20 miles north of me hitting Ashville, AL this morning. No idea on any touchdowns yet. Good luck!

Edited to add: I see most of it is passing by north of Kennesaw, while Rome is at the northern edge of the mass of the storm.
