High Cholesterol? Flax Seed Oil is your friend.

Recommended Posts

A year ago, my cholesterol was much too high. My doctor was considering putting me on a Statin. Instead, I've been taking 3000mg of Flax Seed Oil everyday and I've changed my diet. My cholesterol has dropped 64 points, triglycerides dropped 120 points, HDL moved up 12 points and LDL dropped (unsure of the number of points). All great news. No need for a Statin drug.B|

This has been a public health announcement.

Of the two I strongly suspect the diet is the big change.

You're probably right in most cases. I will not minimize the benefit of a good diet, however, in my case; I started with the Flax Seed Oil a year ago and I changed my diet on 1/31/08 when I joined Weight Watchers. Now I need to be more disciplined with my exercise.

Even though you are young, don't assume that your cholesterol is at a healthy level. Genetics can play a big part in it. It's a huge contributor in my case. I've inherited it from my mom's side.

Don't be so sure it's just diet. There's actually a prescription form of Omega 3 (high dosage, because it's the ester version not the triglyceride version, blood work needs to be done to monitor liver function) that is used for cholesterol lowering purposes, as well as several other things.

I recommend Flax or Fish oil for a lot of my patients for ocular reasons... increases tear film in dry eye patients, has been shown to reduce the risk of macular degeneration, but the cholesterol lowering is also a known effect. Drawback is that it's a blood thinner, so you have to be careful taking it with aspirin, coumadin, warfarin, or other blood thinning agents.

Add some oatmeal, nuts, and olive oil, and you might live forever without a Statin....if you also exercise properly and are nice to your neighbors.

Didn't claim it was just diet - but I think that's the primary issue for most people.

In general, it is always better to get the nutrition you need from food than from supplements, whether it's vitamins, omega-3's, antioxidants etc. That's how we're designed to get nutrition.

Agreed. The drawback with getting omega 3s from diet is the amount of heavy metals often found in salmon and other fish that are high in them, so it's actually safer in this case to get it from a supplement, as they are processed to remove the mercury.

Just adopt a whole foods, plant based diet. Your body will take care of itself. And read The China Study by T. Campbell, It'll save your life!:)

Nyaaa. Thanks, but no thanks...lol. I would DIE!!!

But speaking of cholesterol, mine's REALLY good. LDL = 109. HDL = 70. Not bad for an ol' omnivore eh?

The fish oils are not an option for me as I am allergic.

I don't want my response to Bill to be misunderstood. The change in my diet is a major player here; It's just that I've been taking the Flax Seed Oil a lot longer than I've been watching my diet.

Anyway, the way things are going for me it does not appear that a Statin will be needed.:)
