wilcox 0 #1 March 3, 2006 1. Do you replace your risers after x numbers of jumps? 2. I've got a pair of risers that are a little worn at the places where the softlinks are attached, is this a place where risers are known to break?
piisfish 140 #2 March 3, 2006 I might sound a little cocky, but is your profile up to date ? Quotea little worn at the places where the softlinks are attached, is this a place where risers are known to break? If I had that question myself, I would ask a senior rigger If I don't like a riser, I change it. It's part of the connection between my rig and my canopy. wilcox 0 #3 March 3, 2006 first post? Of course I've got my own opinions on the topic too, these opinions are based on my experiences and the facts I know, but why not learn more
darkwing 5 #4 March 3, 2006 I have not heard of a riser breaking there, but it could happen I suppose. Have it looked at by a rigger. I don't recommend automatic replacement of parts at a given number of jumps, but rather based on inspection. There are too many variables. -- Jeff My Skydiving History
councilman24 37 #5 March 3, 2006 Type 17 or Type 8? Either way I've never seen much wear there. And don't remember in 28 years of hearing about one line group breaking free. French links yes. But if there IS wear, find out why. The softlinks usually don't produce much.I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
ZigZagMarquis 9 #6 March 3, 2006 A lot of gear manufaturer's will recommend that you replace Type 17 risers every 500 jumps / or when ever you get a canopy relined (i.e. when the lines are old and worn out) and that's what I recommend to folks when asked. As for breaking... I've never seen a riser break at the point where the links attach, but if a riser was worn excessively there, I suppose it could happen. I have seen more then one Type 17 riser break down where the gromet is punched throuh the riser, but that was more frequent back before they were made with reinforcement where the gromet went through... and, in part, gave birth to the Type 17 - Integrity risers... but that's a different story. If you have Type 8 risers and if there is no excessive wear or damage to them, I wouldn't worry much replacing them after X-number of jumps.
