poe62 0 #1 March 25, 2008 Oh man! I'm so upset right now. I am a graphic designer at a nice company, so you would think we're praised for creativity, right? Not here. Geez. One of my really talented friends just was reprimanded for talking maybe 15 minutes in a given day. The guy is here at 7am and never leaves before 7pm. His job is on the line because of something THAT trivial. This is after they implemented a policy to have our desktops all exactly the same (with the company logo). I figure the next step is uniforms and shaved heads... ~Nikki http://www.facebook.com/poe62 Irgity Dirgity
Icon134 0 #2 March 25, 2008 I have very limited access to my computer system... I have had numerous discussions with other computer savy coworkers regarding the difficulty that can occur due to this limited access... We always come to the same conclusion although it is severly limiting to not have admin control of our computer systems we understand that although we are computer savy and would be able to handle things far too many people are not and would end up with virus's and other things or worse... and understand the reason for it being in place. Fortunately I am not forced to have a standard background on my computer (which would be very annoying...) but I am forced to have the same homepage and can't login to my personalized iGoogle page at the office... poe62 0 #3 March 25, 2008 I understand the computer issue. While it might in part be do to that, we just recently had a branding campaign run through the company...it's similar to "an army of one." That's where the background change came into play. I like that they're trying to build a family spirit. It just feels like it's kind of on the hostile side...maybe I'm wrong and just misreading the intent. Really, I'm just worried about my friend and his job. Honestly, I don't think my creative directors deserve his talent or work ethic if they treat him like that.~Nikki http://www.facebook.com/poe62 Irgity Dirgity
Baksteen 84 #4 March 25, 2008 Has your friend told the management about his work times? Over here the management NEVER notices when one works late or gets there early, what with them being scrupulous 9-5 workers and all, but they sure notice when you go home at 16.30. When confronted with the fact that I had gone home at 16.30 one day, i shrugged and replied that I work to the job, not the clock. In that case that meant I had worked non-stop the previous day, from 8.00 to 21.00... The reply i got wasa huffy: "You can't expect me to keep tables of when everyone comes in early or leaves late." I pointed out that she did seem to keep such a table for people who leave early and my boss never brought up the subject again. As to computer access, you can't even install a company approved computer program, such as photoshop unless you're an administrator. Sicne the IT department doesn't have time to go around the scores of computers installing all the programs which people need they solved the problem by making anyone who asks administrator. The startup program DOES delete all cookies and the browsing history every day, and resets the internet homepage to that of the university. Since everyone is way too lazy to keep on typing their hotmail every day, this means that usually everyone simply logs on on monday morning, and shuts down on friday evening, locking the PC if they remember to. Except that any administrator can unlock every computer... How's that for security? gemini 0 #6 March 25, 2008 I once worked with a guy who was known as always being at work. He was there when you came in and was there when you left. I asked him one time if he really worked all those hours and he chuckled and said, "You know, if you get to work 5 minutes before the boss and leave 5 minutes after he leaves...." popsjumper 2 #7 March 25, 2008 Quote Sometimes two can play the game. I was always good at "playing the corporate games". That's why I lasted just short of 25 years whilst others, much more qualified, were let go during layoffs. Only one boss caught on and that's because he was playing too...we became good friends. My reality and yours are quite different. I think we're all Bozos on this bus. When I read the original post my first thought is "there's probably more to the story than what your co-worker told you." Politics is b.s., and your co-worker may have gotten caught up in it, but now he's turning around trying to stir it up himself. I always feel like you should pick your battles wisely at the workplace. Keep your energy positive and it pays a lot of dividends. And when you really do need to fight the battles, you've got something in your karma bank to fight with."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. Zenister 0 #13 March 25, 2008 sounds to me like its time for the worker bees too explain to management how things really are. I almost guarantee there is some mid level meddler implementing said ridiculous policies simply for the evaluation bullets. When enough ruckus is raised that the real decision makers take notice of what as actually going on below them (most accept the word of their subs until it becomes apparent they are being fed a line) such BS policies generally vanish. That or the really productive people go to work for the competition. To many decisions handed down from the 'adminosphere' is bad for both productivity and the bottom line. Top level managers usually recognize this or they wouldn't have made it where they are, Mid level wanna bes usually do not.____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
