bigway 4 #1 March 26, 2008 QuoteThis is one crazy family tree! The New England Historic Genealogical Society, the oldest and largest nonprofit genealogical organization in the country, has found a way to get Barack and Hillary together -- through lineage! They claim Barack Obama and Brad Pitt are ninth cousins, and Hillary Clinton is related to Pitt's baby mama, Angelina Jolie -- they're also ninth cousins. That family reunion would have drama for days! The report also says that Obama is a very distant relative of President Bush. According to the Geological Society , they are 10th cousins, once removed ... whatever that means. Barack is also linked to five other Presidents -- including Harry S. Truman and Gerald Ford. Hillary is a distant cousin of singers Madonna, Celine Dion and Alanis Morissette, because of French-Canadian descent on her mother's side. If she doesn't win the nomination, maybe they can form a band That's all. .Karnage Krew Gear Store .
SpeedRacer 1 #2 March 26, 2008 when you go back to 9th or 10th cousins, you get a pretty big tree. That's like two to two and a half centuries ago. Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------

kallend 2,150 #5 March 26, 2008 Quote they are 10th cousins, once removed ... whatever that means. . That means they have a common ancestor 11 generations ago for one and 12 generations ago for the other. First cousins have a common grandparent (2 generations prior) 2nd cousins have a common great grandparent (3 generations prior) A "remove" means that the related cousins are not themselves in the same generation. So in the case of first cousins once removed, the common ancestor is the grandparent of one who is also the great-grandparent of the other. Or to put it another way, your first cousin's child is your first cousin once removed, and your first cousin's grandchild is your first cousin twice removed.... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.
happythoughts 0 #6 March 26, 2008 Quote when you go back to 9th or 10th cousins, you get a pretty big tree. That's like two to two and a half centuries ago. Every generation that you go back, you double the number of relations. 2-parents, 4-grandparents... So, if you use 20 years as a standard generation (probably a large number, but easy for math), 10 generations is 200 years. Two to the tenth is 1024. So, going back only 10 generations, 200 years ago, you had over 1,000 ancestors. Most of us are related to one king and 25 horse-thieves. The horse thieves have just as much bearing on our current nobility as the king, but people never bring them up.
