Central Florida people....

Recommended Posts

So I heard on the news that there are some considerations to making I-4 a toll road. My first reaction was screw that, but then I go to thinking, a lot of Central Florida people all ready own a SunPass becuase of the other toll roads around here. Yes, it would be an additional expense, but just think about all the tourists that visit Florida everyday that would be paying tolls.... I know I will probably be in the minority for thinking this is a good idea...

What justification are they giving for making it a Toll. Here in OZ at least, Tolls are only imposed on roads for the purpose of recouping build costs.
If the road is already exsisting, they wont Toll it.

Only thing I can think of is they need highway construction/maintenance funds. I don't think the feds are going to have enough to go around from their coffers, what with the bloody war going on.

It is just another opportunity to tax people and then piss it away on raises for themselves.

They want to take more money and add no value to the traffic system.

Driving I-4 is a disaster as it is. Using it is just a roll of the dice. Either there is an accident and the traffic stops for an hour, or it is the weather and it crawls.

I know people who commute from Orlando to Tampa and vice-versa. They are already spending $10 a day on gas to get to work.

If they want to tax me again, they need to put a light rail system in place and give me some value for my money. Tampa-Orlando-Miami and maybe St Pete.

Tourists could go between airports, the beaches, and Disney.

Working people could commute. I would certainly use it.

I voted for the the high-speed rail when they were talking about it a few years back. Still don't really understand why it never manifested. I still think it would be a great idea. And I agree I-4 is a nightmare most of the time.

On some sage advice of others, I am buying a house in Orlando in an area will allow me to avoid I-4 all together. I was going to buy in the Deltona but would have to commute via -4 to get to work. What little time I do have on -4 was not pleasant. I'm not sure what a toll on the road will accomplish other than to pay for upgrades. Concur with prior post, light rail is the way to go.

If they are recieving or ever recieved Federal money for it they basically can not turn it into a toll road unless they agree to only use the money to reconstruct it or recondition it with the money earned. That was part of a pilot program the FHA was looking at it seems, otherwise no tolls are allowed on the Interstate system if federal dollars were used. Since I-4 is part of the official National Interstate Highway system there is little chance of the DOT allowing Florida to make money off of one its pieces of property. ;)http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/programadmin/tollfac.cfm

http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/infrastructure/tollroad.htm Explains the fucked up interchange of I-70 / I-70/I-76 in PA. If you've been there you know how screwed up it is.
