DHolland 0 #1 April 24, 2008 I was at the dropzone last week and a son had told his dad they were going to a model airplane convention, he then drove to the DZ and said happy birthday your skydiving today! The funny part was the dad was 50 and the dad about 75. I want to get my dad to go skydiving but i dont know if its something he wants to try although i know he will love it if he goes. Should I just invite him to come along and hang out with me at the DZ, buy him a tandem, or just let it go because he is scurred.
Conundrum 1 #2 April 24, 2008 I used to ask my dad all the time when he was going to make a jump with me. I don't think he'll ever go so I've stopped wasting my breath.

happythoughts 0 #4 April 24, 2008 People either really want to go skydiving or really don't. You shouldn't try to move them from one category to another. It is their decision. An injured knee or ankle is a lot more problematic at your dads age. The cost/benefit comparison is different. He is considering different things. Show him some videos. It is his decision. Be excited that he accepts your decisions for your life.

jellob 0 #9 April 24, 2008 I just jumped with my dad this past weekend. He is almost 57. I asked once if he wanted to go with me and he said the next time he visited, he would. He came for a visit and made good on his word. He really liked it, but seemed to think once was enough! A friend told me once to not get my hopes up or my feelings hurt if he didn't like it. Even though we really enjoy it and seem to think everyone else should, doesn't mean they will. Ask him, show him your videos, and take him to the dz so he can see what happens. Then he can decide without pressure.
AnKaLi 0 #10 April 24, 2008 my bro and I are always trying to get my dad to do a tandem, I don't think it will ever happen. I'm hoping to get him in the tunnel soon, so he can at least share something with us in regards to our passion
happythoughts 0 #11 April 24, 2008 Quote My dad just thinks it's a waste of money. Recreation generally is. It is enjoyment. That is the reward. The money is not wasted, just spent on our personal preference. What real value does the recreational golfer get? He hits the ball, he chases it. He hits the ball, he chases it. At the end of the day, what does he have? If you spend $7K on a trip to Hawaii, what do you have when you get home? I spent $7K on my new rig and I still have something. I spent $30K on a boat, dock, and boat ramp. I water skied and did some fishing. I figure that I spent $200 a fish for what? To brag that I outsmarted a trout? Quote Reading your post just made me realize I'm now the same age my dad was when I started jumping (50) !! I always wished my Dad could have made at least one, he certainly wanted to...double knee replacements nixed any serious thought. Didn't stop him from coming out to the DZ on a regular basis...and since he ALWAYS brought beer he was welcomed. Dad took a lotta pics of everybody and would frame and present the best ones, took a boatload of observation rides to watch me jump and even became an accuracy judge so he could do more than just 'watch' at local meets. ...Invite your Dad out for an afternoon, just might be something he'll enjoy on some level even if it's not making a skydive! ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~

iopenhi 0 #14 April 24, 2008 I hinted at it once with my Dad and got the response I expected: "Once was enough." He punched from a B-52 over New Mexico back in 1961, then spent two days on the side of a mountain all busted up and wrapped up in his canopy before he was spotted. I figure there's really no sense in pushing the issue... one account hereYou can't make chicken salad out of chicken manure.

billeisele 130 #16 April 24, 2008 if they kinda want to go and you encourage them that is great, regardless of how much fun we know it is there are folks that just don't want to jump, please people stop forcing people to jump by putting them in situations that are too embasrrassing to back out of not saying that is the case here, just make a general comment having a tandem passenger that really does not want to jump is not any fun for either person, the passenger is truly scared and the TM has a lot of work to doGive one city to the thugs so they can all live together. I vote for Chicago where they have strict gun laws.
