PLFXpert 0 #1 July 17, 2007 Not the big things, but the "I've always wanted to learn/do that but never get around to it..." If you could snap your fingers and instantly learn/do one thing, what would it be? I was just thinking it'd be nice if I could snap my fingers and be able to write & speak Spanish fluently. It makes no sense I don't already. I mean, I like to learn. It would be useful in both my position and location (not to be confused with one another). And I certainly love rolling my tongue. I do it all the time, just for fun. Yet, Spanish One CD (of nine I bought in a pack) still sits in my CD player. For some reason I'm always just a little bit more in the mood for some classic rock. So, that would be my one thing, I think. Y, tu?Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.

quade 4 #3 July 17, 2007 I approve of this thread. The pity is that somethings are FAR more difficult to learn later in life and language especially is one of them. If I had paid atention 40ish years ago I would have learned Spanish and now I regret not doing so. However, what I regret even more is not paying attention in music class. I have a huge appreciation for music, but am personally inept and wish I had taken time earlier in life to actually learn to speak the language of music rather than simply sitting on the side lines and marvel at it.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

MrFreefall383 0 #6 July 17, 2007 Following the threadstarter's line of thought, I'd like to snap my fingers and instantly know Mandarin Chinese. It would make learning Arabic a shitload easier, as well as Farsi. But sadly, that would never happen, anyone know good language courses besides the $400 Rosetta Stone CDs?"If at first you don't succeed... well, so much for skydiving." - aviation cliche
simplyputsi 0 #7 July 17, 2007 I kind of agree with you. I'd like to learn French, and spanish so that I can at least attempt to look like i'm trying when I visit Europe. I also want to learn to play the piano. Wanted to take voice lessons once, but now not so much. Maybe after this triathlon stuff I'll take up my time with one of those activities. That and two chicks at the same time. Skymama's #2 stalker -
PLFXpert 0 #8 July 17, 2007 You know, I'm happy you said that... We all do some things and not others even if we think we want to do them so considerably. As a sidenote: Music was a natural thing for me. I began piano at 4, only b/c my father said I should learn that before drums (which is what I really wanted to play ).While I hated it at times, it was a very natural ability. And I never hated music. I HAD to be in EVERYTHING--O.R.F. ensemble, recorder (think elementary school), chorus, music appreciation, etc. But you know, I wanted to burn my piano at age 14. Instead, I just quit. And now at 26--for the first time since--I've had the urge to play again. But you're right about the "later in life". Everyone seems to think I'll pick it up instantly and play like I did before. I haven't yet bought a piano b/c...well...I don't feel like I remember. It's almost as if I blocked it out entirely Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.

jtval 0 #12 July 17, 2007 Its a shame you stopped playing butnow is the time to unlock it. Piano can be an amazing instrument....or it can be utterly anoying. I dont know what I would do if I didn't have at least one guitar.(even though I rarely play it now)My photos My Videos

PLFXpert 0 #15 July 17, 2007 Can you believe Billy has never heard me play??? He's heard the stories, seen the awards, blah, blah, blah. I know he really wants me to play for him, but after all that hype??? It's a major deterrent. One day I'll surprise him when he's long since given up. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back. Shotgun 1 #17 July 17, 2007 I want to finish reading Atlas Shrugged. It's been sitting in my bookshelf for years now, with the bookmark about a quarter of the way through (where I left off). I was enjoying it, but for some reason I keep picking up other books to read instead. Oh, and the language thing. I've tried forcing myself to learn Spanish because it seems like the practical language to learn, but I'm really not that interested in it. Russian seems much more interesting, but it doesn't seem very practical. Hmm, maybe one of these days . . .
jtval 0 #18 July 17, 2007 Play for him, get over your self-consciousness. Well, first play for yourself, then Billy. Knock off the rust and get comfortable playing and stop depriving yourself from that part of you. I felt akward playing in front of certain people and it sucked. I know what you mean about the hype though. My photos My Videos
Nightingale 0 #19 July 17, 2007 I keep a list titled "101 Things to do Before I Die" There's always 101 things on the list, from silly stuff like "Read War and Peace" to more complicated stuff like "Learn Spanish" and "Visit Africa". It's just something I've done since I was little, and I've kept it around because it's a reminder... Every time I think "I have to do this someday!" I add it to the list. I just removed the final item on the original list a few years ago. I learned to do a cartwheel. I'm slowly learning Spanish using Rosetta Stone. The program is awesome and well worth the money, and it's actually entertaining.

PLFXpert 0 #22 July 17, 2007 I ordinarily don't care at all about making a fool of myself (which you already know.). But in this case--at the risk of tooting my own horn--I'm "supposedly" really good... But, I haven't touched a key in 12 years. But, enough about that already. I will buy a piano soon. New house first. Piano next. If I buy one, I'm going all out. Big daddy grand, baby! Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.

Icon134 0 #25 July 17, 2007 I did actually buy a relatively nice digital piano before I took up skydiving... I started to learn it again (I also had lessons when I was little) but my progress was stalled shortly after taking up skydiving... Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
