Bengal/Toyger cats?

Recommended Posts

It's time to bring a new feline into the home (my cat of 13 years passed on about a month back). We're considering a Toyger or Bengal. Anyone have any experience with the general personalities of these breeds?

Woohoo, I'm the first that gets to say it...

How about an unwanted humane league or rescue cat?:P

I don't know those breeds, but my cat is a huge Russian Blue (from humane league) and has the best personality of any cat I've ever met. Sweet natured, purrs constantly, lap cat.

My hubby and I would like to adopt a bengal or bengal mix as a playmate to our feisty domestic shorthair. If you want to buy a kitten they run between $400 and 1300 for pet quality depending on markings, or you can adopt an adult from a rescue organization or a breeder that's retired. They are between 7 and 20 lbs and very active and intelligent. If you never had one (like us) it is best to read up on them prior to bringing one home, but I suppose one has to start somewhere.
Toygers are relatively new, expect to pay thousands for a pet quality kitten.
This a good group to join if you are interested in adopting.

Those are really cool breeds, and if I had a cat it'd probably be along those lines.

However, can I interest you in one of my neighbor's new kitties? (yeah, this is the neighbor who already has 20+ feral cats and now one of the cats has a litter of kittens.) Please rescue us! :S

Bengals are only a few generations from wild and some times take on those tendencies again. My fiances uncle who is a vet assistant had to give his rescued one away again after it got territorial and started attacking everything that came near its space including his other cats and dogs. They are a lot easier to socialize form kittens but it was a really pretty cat that we would have taken if we could have got it to get along with our cats.

The best method, imo, to achieve maximum felicity for all parties--both man & furball--is to first research the "general personalities" of all breeds, and then to consider one.
