LisaM 0 #26 May 2, 2008 QuoteA good one I've been using for at least a year or more is putting my car in neutral when I can, as I have a manual. What I mean is I coast when the terrain allows. There are places in routes to and from work that allow me to coast for a mile. It may not be that big of a deal, but every little bit helps. I do this too. Going to pick up my s on from school I can coast for a couple of miles on the trip. I love it. I actually filled up this morning and reset my average mpg and by the time I got to work was at about 29.8. I usually get 22-23 on a tank in town. I followed a comfortable distance and didn't haul a$$ off the lights. I did speed up every now and then for the jerk who thought they were going to cut me off and then turn right. This afternoon will be different; afternoon traffic is yucky congested and I seem to catch every damn light. ~ Lisa ~ Do you Rigminder?

That may work where you dont need to reduce speed, but when slowing down in a manual it is ALWAYS best to have the car in gear. This is beacuse when the throttle is not applied when the car is in gear, NO fuel is used. Hwoever, if you stick it in neutral whilse slowing down then the engine will use fuel on tick over, which can add up to quite alot. BP I don't believe you are correct. It is not ALWAYS best to slow down while in gear using a manual. Can you elaborate on why you think a car in gear and a car idling, not being given any gas, have different gas consumptions? Are you saying that the engine is not consuming any gas when a car is in gear and no gas is applied?Skymama's #2 stalker -
Broke 0 #28 May 2, 2008 Don't race to the red light. If you see the light ahead of you is red coast. that way you'll use less gas, and you will even wear less on your brakes. Also if the light turns green before you get to it you don't have to use as much gas accellerating to your cruising speedDivot your source for all things Hillbilly.
