Career goes Bye-Bye

Recommended Posts

Well, it's done. After 26 years in the Baltimore County Fire Dept., I signed the papers at the retirement office. Badge 1717 has officially 12 shifts left to work. After 5-30-08, I'll be just another civilian. (Not that there's anything wrong with civilians).

Now the big question is: what next? At the age of 45, I'm WAY too young to retire to nothing (and besides, my wife has told me that in no way am I allowed to be underfoot all day), so a second career , or grad school, is in order. I was setting up to be a drop zone bum. I have a tandem and coach ratings, riggers ticket, so things were looking like I might be able to do that full time, BUT last november I got a very nasty post-op infection in my left knee, so DZ bum isn't an option right now. I went on an initial interview last week for the position of aquatics director at a local gym (my B.S. is in exercise physiology) , but they tried to bait and switch me into sales ( Of all the things I could see myself doing, sales IS NOT one of them). I'd like to use my degree, but only to work with athletes, not fitness clients. (I'm burned out on working with middle aged guys who, at the age of 50, suddenly discover that they're invisble to women and want to fit into their 20 year old clothes [ and want to get there in three weeks] or the three hundred pound women who want to cry about the fact that their husbands aren't interested in them anymore and then want to cry about having to actually do work to get their bodies back. Been there, done that, got the T shirt.)

So, while I have no idea what I'm going to do for a second career, I do know that my first stop will be the big screen store for that 58" plasma I've been looking at.:)

First, Congrats-glad you made it through
second, if you have a 58" plasma tv, you don't need a job, you need an extensive porn collection

:)

If his wife is a home-maker, that could be a bit problematic. :D

I was thinking Smoke Jumper, but I think he's tired of fighting fires started by dumbasses... :P

Become an Arson Investigator.

Good one! All those years fighting them, he shouldn't have a problem transitioning to finding the clues.

The guy who inspected my house before I bought it, was in the construction business for 20+ years. He retired due to being physically worn out. His career as a home inspector was a natural transition.

Most of them, true... If they're out in the middle of nowhere threatening nobody, let 'em burn. It's part of nature renewing itself.

Only if working for an insurance company. Arson is one of the easiest crimes to prove happened- "Here's the pattern, here's the accelerant' but one of the hardest to convict. Insurance investigators don't have quite as heavy a burden of proof to deny payment as a law officer has to get a conviction. Avoid the stress.

Congrats, Tink.

Have you given any thought to using your experience and background in Emergency Management? I'll be at the Governor's Hurricane conference in Ft. Lauderdale next week. Most States have numerous positions in Administration, Operations, Logistics, Training & Education, etc. If you're done with government service; there are numerous needs in private industry for those with your expertise. Feel free to send me a PM if you're interested in either.

did you know that fire supression efforts for the past 40 years are responsible for a lot of the big fires now?

How so? Just curious... I can only think of them setting back-fires, but admittedly don't know too much about fire-fighting.

The faster you put out a forest fire the more unburnt fuel is left lying around. Then the next time there is a fire in that area the fire is bigger.

Yeah that crossed my mind ( for about a femtosecond), but in the three hours it takes to burn a structure to the ground, you can chase a brush/wild fire 10-20 miles and not make a dent in it. Besides for a seasonal job, it doesn't pay well.

I thought about that, but it's really kind of too close to being back in the F.D.
