Special Olympics...Spring Track

Recommended Posts

My baby boy has a gold medal and two silvers! B|B| Yippee!

-Now then, yes, little Derick was the only competitor in one of those and just one of 2 in the others, but he did SO GOOD! We're so proud! :)
Special Olympics regional spring track meet was this past Saturday. It POURED DOWN RAIN the whole second half. [:/] The kids were so patient with all of the cold and wet and waiting, though! He did great, and his twin did great at being patient waiting for brother's events. B|

Here are a few pics. ;) I'll download some more when I get the 'good' camera going...

First pic: That's Derick in second place in the green shirt with white sleeves. This was the 100m walk (Sp Oly has a walk and a dash -Derick has been practicing to walk around the track in the lines ALL YEAR LONG!) On the sidelines is his coach/classroom teacher Rebecca (she is AWESOME! Very proactive teacher!) she is keeping him to task as he walks.

Second pic: Derick is almost to the finish line but he stops to hop and twirl. Little Derick likes to hop and twirl as he walks, and the crowd was loving it.

Third pic: After he finishes the race, he's running to give us hugs and collect his 'prize' (Skittles :P).

(Hey if y'all could please refrain from the 'special olympics' jokes in this thread I'd appreciate it -should be incredibly obvious that that would be totally inappropriate, but...:S)

Derick already competed in Sp Oly bowling, and missed swimming (time conflicts), and I haven't checked the schedule yet for the next events but we're excited! :)
Edit to add: for those that don't know, my 10 year old twin sons have Autism. ;)

That is awesome! B| Fireflytx and I volunteered at our local SO spring track last year and had the best time ever. All the competitors are super excited about being there and they have the best time. You can't help but be excited with them! Glad to see Derick had a great time as well.:)

Never look down on someone, unless they are going down on you.

Jaye, I'm really glad you told us he was hopping and twirling in pic 2 because it almost looks like he's about to drop trou :o! Congrats, that's awesome for Derick! You guys must have been so proud. :)

Yipee Derick! Way to go buddy! When and where was this? You should have told us and we would have totally gone and cheered and clapped! That would have been a blast. That is so awesome! Give Derick a big hug for me! B|

Nah you wouldn't have wanted to go to that particular meet. It was so much 'hurry up and wait' and in the cold and rain...miserable! [:/] It was allll the way up in Shoreline.

Rebecca and I were talking about it...geez Special Olympics has been running for years, and they still can't do any better than a schedule that reads, "Begins at 9am. Ends around 5:30pm"...uh, huh? :S My baby was in heats #82, and 94, and 110 or something and the schedule says NOTHING about how many heats...or that they won't get to these events until at earliest 2pm...or somethin' like that.

Our babies literally waited in the Suburban (thank God for big trucks!!) for 3 straight hours eating snacks and watching Disney movies waiting for the events to roll around. -Sounds ok, but imagine being stuck in a truck in the cold and rain for 3 hours with 6 people -two of which are severely autistic. :P

Next time we'll give y'all a heads up. B|

Thank you both for volunteering. It just couldn't happen without people like you. B|

-Actually, the 'proud skydiving mom' moment came later when he hugged a girl's boobies! :o:o:o:$ His coach apologized to the poor girl. :D

Poor Derick and his Autistic lack of social skills!! :$:$:$

....or maybe he's more typical than he lets on...? :|:):P
