madhatter 0 #1 May 9, 2008 It seemed like a good idea this morning... Read some reports on SP3 for XP and thought 'Hey! Why not?' Firstly the Windows Update 'typical' download of 66Mb turned out to be 360Mb After ages to install & reboot, everything worked fine 'til this afternoon, when I decided to shut down, went shopping etc. & tried to switch on my laptop at about 21:00 tonight and... NOTHING! "File c:\windows\system32\config\system cannot be found" Got out my trusty XP cd (surprising how often you need it ) to see if I could repair the fuckup. I ended up having to partition the drive, load a second OS just to get into Windows! Only then I could get online to look for some advice. Oh! Did I mention my documents folder is private, meaning that there's no way I could get into it if I couldn't log on under my usual user name? It's now past 03:00 & I finally managed to reset administrator passwords & get the original OS to open in safe (slow) mode. Still not exactly sure what I did to get there, but I'm just happy I can backup my e-mails & files. The next step will be re-formatting the hard drive & loading everything again, as I need the damn thing to work in 5 hours' time. Shit this sucks! A VERY MERRY UNBIRTHDAY TO YOU!!! madhatter 0 #3 May 9, 2008 Thanks, I finally magaed to get everything backed up. The e-mails were the biggest headache, but seems I got them too. I've had 3 hours sleep & postponed the morning's appointments, so hopefully i can get the machine fully functional now A VERY MERRY UNBIRTHDAY TO YOU!!! mrwrong 0 #4 May 9, 2008 Hummmm.. You probably don't want to hear this but I can't resist telling... I installed XP SP3 this morning and everything worked perfectly even after the reboot “The sum of intelligence on the planet is a constant; the population is growing.” - George Bernard Shaw He who dies with the most toys, wins..... dudeist skydiver # 19515 Buy quality and cry once! madhatter 0 #5 May 9, 2008 Hey, that's good for you & I hope it keeps on working I now have a newly formatted harddrive with an old SP2 version, wasting hours on reinstalling all my other software. Even after I got the original OS running again many of my hardware settings were buggered, my antivirus wouldn't start (Avast) at all, etc. A VERY MERRY UNBIRTHDAY TO YOU!!! mrwrong 0 #6 May 9, 2008 *sigh*.. Sorry to hear that... It really sucks when you have to do a clean sweep of a corrupted installation. The AntiVirus... I have a better recommendation for you. I have been running NOD32 for a couple of years now and I just love it.. Completely free from viruses since I installed that. Even though I sometimes surf on 'dodgy' places We are running Avast at work on a couple of PC's and I don't really trust it “The sum of intelligence on the planet is a constant; the population is growing.” - George Bernard Shaw He who dies with the most toys, wins..... dudeist skydiver # 19515 Buy quality and cry once! mrwrong 0 #8 May 9, 2008 Can't see how you would regret checking NOD32 out. idrankwhat 0 #9 May 9, 2008 You probably don't want to hear this either. I bought a Macbook last December. I think I've used my home PC about three times since then and I've called it names each and every time. Next machine will be an iMac. I don't want to be "annoying Mac dude" but when they say "it just works" they mean it.

Throw in some Linux freaks as well, just for the fun of it Yea, you're probably right. I hate doing it because "those guys" used to annoy the crap out of me. Then I tried to buy a laptop that didn't have Vista on it. I gave up and crossed over to the dark side. The linux folks seem pretty happy too but they have time to tinker. I'm just happy that I don't have to tinker, repeatedly reboot and hunt for drivers all the time. Now I just laugh at my Windows machine at work. After a re-install I had to downgrade Office XP to 2K because it wouldn't open our database. Then I got a Windows security alert because the Windows firewall blocked a Windows media player update. I'm supporting systems that are produced as 'Medical Device Systems' and due to the complex validation process it takes a couple of years before new OS's are supported... Every Windows version that has come out over the years, it appears that Vista is the absolute worst as far as trouble-shooting the problems associated with it.
