Crash Test Dummies take on a new meaning

Recommended Posts

I knew car builders and safety evaluators did controlled car crash tests.

I didn't know they did it for airplanes, like this Boeing 720! :o

Wow... That's an expensive crash test! B|

They actually have done /do emergency evacuation drills/testing using live humans. Individual pay increases based on their time to make it to and exit the aircraft without using violence in a simulated emergency.

PSA: the fastest way to get off an airplane full of people trying to get off of it in an emergency is not to use the isle and follow the lighted walkway but to go over the seats.

Living up here in Boeing country, we read about those exit tests in the paper. A lot of money is riding on whether or not your newly designed airliner can meet the FAA requirements for the tests. They do it with lights out, luggage in the aisle, and malfunctioning doors. There's an occasional broken leg or two in the process, but no one said it would be easy.:D

When the FAA was preparing for the 720 crash test, some one noticed a problem in the cabin full of dummies. The first batch. loaded in the front, had been all light colored. The 2nd batch of dummies, installed in the remaining back rows, were much darker. A politically sensitve FAA employee noticed that and had them mixed around a little for a more diverse seating arrangement. :D

The FAA also blamed the failure on the test on the fact that the #3 engine was shredded by the pylon intended for the wing tank, due to an off centerline belly landing. This allowed "chopped" AMK fuel to spew from the hot section of the engine, lighting the fireworks. Hard to say what would have happened otherwise, though.

When was this? Back in the 60's? ;)
