jloirsdaan 0 #1 February 3, 2006 Okay, need some advice. I'm sitting here in Deland pondering buying a brand new M3 and PDR160. Gave me a price of around 2900 dollars. Haven't got the exact quote yet.... Sounds like an EXTREMELY good price. I think I'm getting the container for around 2000 and the PDR for 900ish. Here's the kicker....I got a wife and kids to take care of . I wouldn't go broke...but would be a little tight for a month or so. Wife says go ahead but still......I'd like to see what other people think. I guess I need justification ! What would you guys do? My current gear is from 1989....a Javelin with like 1500 jumps on it a Glide Path Maverick reserve with 3 deployments. The main is a Sabre 190 with 300ish jumps on it....I'm keeping the main and putting it in the Vector if I get it. The container is made for a 170 so it'd be tight....but leaves me room to go to a 170 and later a 150....so it'd last for a LONG time. I can't see being on a 150 for YEARS. Enough info....let me know what you guys/gals think. Jordan Go Fast, Dock Soft.
NWFlyer 2 #2 February 3, 2006 Are you back for the foreseeable future? If it'll be a while before you get to jump regularly again, maybe you want to wait. Otherwise, I say go for it, especially given that you'll probably pay a deposit now and the balance on delivery. Might help your budgeting a bit more. jloirsdaan 0 #3 February 3, 2006 Actually....I'd be jumping it tomorrow. It's stock and the colors I'd want....I could get it packed and walk out of here with it right now. I'm only home for two weeks....but I've been wanting a new rig since before I got deployed. Good timing money wise.....colors are great.....plus I wouldn't have to jump my old uncomfortable rig..... pilotdave 0 #4 February 3, 2006 What options does it come with? No way of knowing if it's a good price or not without knowing the details. It's about what I paid for my Vector 3 and PDR. Is it just the regular retail price, or is it some kind of deal? Dave
sundevil777 102 #5 February 3, 2006 If you don't size the container for what you've got now, it will be very stiff (uncomfortable), hard and frustrating to pack, and likely will look bad. It is not very satisfying to spend so much money and have new gear with these troubles. edit - since it is a stock rig, you really should try it out with the reserve in it to check how the main fits before you commit to buying it.People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am

skybytch 273 #8 February 3, 2006 You earned the money, you want a new rig, your wife says go for it... who cares what anyone else thinks? If you don't think you're ready for a 170 main yet, do you really want your next (first?) reserve ride to be on a reserve that is about that same size? A 176 might be a better choice. What options are included on the container for that price? How much fun do you think it's going to be to pack a 190 into a rig designed to fit a 170 snugly? How long will you be willing to struggle with it before you decide to downsize just to make packing easier (which is, imho, the worst possible reason for downsizing)? jloirsdaan 0 #9 February 3, 2006 Okay...just shot over to RWS site and looked up the pricing with the options I know it comes with and it gave me a price of $2664. So that'd be $600 or more off there. Again, he hasn't given me the final quote yet....so I don't know what the final price is....but it should be close to that. I'm going to see what the final price comes to......and repost. Jordan Go Fast, Dock Soft.

Take 20% off that, then add the cost of the options - that's what you can get from pretty much any dealer out there.

jloirsdaan 0 #12 February 3, 2006 She was coming to tell me as I was walking back with the receipt . She thought she got the regular 20% and I got 22% off with them here. Didn't say anything about the ture discount she would have gotten. I ended up getting it for $2900. $2040 for the container. Has articulated harness, backpad, embroidery, freefly mod, pinstriping, leather hackey, and a couple other things. Ended up that I got the container for $1638 and $70 off all the options....and then the PDR for $860. I would have liked to go over to the RWS and have talked to them with Lisa's discount....but she didn't tell me in time. I'd already turned it over to the rigger (too bad she hasn't quite finished yet). The plus to this I guess is I'll be jumping it this afternoon if the weather clears up or tomorrow if not! But, I'll be in the market for a Sabre2 170 in the near future....so at least I know about that now! Thanks Gus!! Jordan Go Fast, Dock Soft.

JohnnyZ 0 #15 February 3, 2006 It's on there (about 6th from the bottom)... I have one on my current Micron. I had a chop with it last summer and was really impressed with it... FAST. I was spinning on my back, pulled my cut away and by the time I touched the reserve handle it was already opening. I think that I'm a pretty fast grabber too. We were hop & popping at the pond that day, so I wasn't wearing my video camera (to time it).

jloirsdaan 0 #18 February 5, 2006 Well, I bought it....and now having jumped it on 4 jumps.....I LOVE IT! Thanks RWS and SD Deland. I'm happy that they had a stock rig that fit me. They also had it packed up and ready to jump within a couple hours. But the weather prevented that until today. I'll have to take some pictures and post them....I guess I owe beer now! mjosparky 4 #19 February 6, 2006 You have 180 jumps and 1 year is the sport. You are jumping a reserve that is loaded at what the manufacture recommends for an Expert canopy pilot. You will soon be downsizing to a main that is loaded at 1.3:1 Hell, what could possibly go wrong? jloirsdaan 0 #20 February 7, 2006 Yep, pretty much right on. Two years in the sport. My profile needed updating. I load the reserve at 1.3 and I'll be loading the main at 1.2. The number should probably be flip flopped....but thats not really how they design rigs. I wish they did. I wish I could put a 170ish reserve in there with a 170 main....but 160 is the closest size to fit in there. I do wonder what people think a good time to downsize is.....the way lots of people talk it seems never is a good time. I have no plans in the near future to go below a 170 and a 1.2 wingloading. Unless I gain weight....then it may go up . I think going to a 170 at 1.2 is just fine....I've put almost all of my jumps on my current canopy. I'm stepping down ONE size with new gear. And adding .1 to the wingloading. Unfortunately...I can't keep a 201 reserve. Just wouldn't fit in the rig. I'm no where near an aggressive canopy pilot. I like em nice and smooth and straight in. Don't have much of a desire to swoop.....maybe WAYYYYYY into the future...but I doubt it. I think 170 is going to be as far as I step down. I am calm under canopy. I've been in a few hairy situations (that stupidity put me in) that I was tempted to try a quick toggle turn....but having learned how to do good braked turns, got out of harms way with a smooth braked turn minimal altitude loss, and missed the obsticle. Also misread a windsock early on (with the 190) and landed in a 20 mph downwind. Was tempted to try a quick turn to try to face into the wind. But realized even brakeing a turn around probably wouldn't have worked. Nice smooth flare....PLF....just a couple scratches and a dirty rig and a lesson learned. I think (with limited experience this should be taken with a grain of salt I guess) that a good time to step down is when you can land downwind, into the wind, crosswind, in a very tight area, etc. Someone posted a better list. I can do all of those things on my current canopy. I've landed downwind, crosswind, in tight landing areas, in brakes, etc. I'm still on my 190 and probably will be for around another 6 months or more....possibly a year. The 160 is a bit small. But if I want a container that fits a 170...... I wish I could find a F-111 7 Cell 160 to land a few times to know what to expect. Any suggestions out there on how to do that? I've went on too much here. I don't want to downsize too fast. I was tempted to earlier on. But waited. I got a nice tax return, found a good deal on a rig....it fit....I bought it. I will be going back to Iraq for another layoff....and when I get back I'll be jumping my Javelin with the 201 reserve back in it for a while. Maybe do some jumps on the wifes Triathlon 160 to get an idea what it might fly like. Bottom line is, I've got nothing but time to learn. I'm in no hurry. I've got the Vector, and still have the Javelin. After the layoff.....I'll play it safe. Then think about actually buying the smaller main. Jordan Go Fast, Dock Soft. Any suggestions out there on how to do that? no need to do that when you can demo a PDR 160 just like is in your rig, rigged as a main, for $30 for two weeks (!). Put some jumps on it then just use it when you need it, no worries. PD demo page good luck and be safe You can have it good, fast, or cheap: pick two.
