Retro Is So Cool

Recommended Posts

Even cooler is visiting your mom and finding out she has every album Skynyrd ever released. After staring in shock for a minute or two, I said "The only thing that would surprise me more would be if you told me you used to be a guy." :)

"When in doubt I whip it out,
I got me a rock-and-roll band.
It's a free-for-all."

If I ever meet your Mom, I will buy her a PBR. :)

We were in Lexington, VA this weekend, walking down the sidewalk on the way to dinner. A pickup drove by playing "The Needle and the Spoon" - I was whistling or humming it for the rest of the night. B| Skynyrd is still very much alive in these parts.

I was looking through skymall the other day on a flight... one of the vendors had a record player that had a usb out so you could make mp3's out of our old vinyls.

There are a couple of those (at least) out there....I have a Numark TT-USB, got it just for transferring vinyl to disc (since most of the good stuff will never come out on cd). There is one (can't recall the brand name), has a built-in pre-amp...with the Numark, I had to add one in-line. They actually work pretty well and come with software to clean-up scratches, dust noise, etc.
"T'was ever thus."

I am in the process of "being assembled" (meaning: I'm not assembling it) into a band - more of an acoustic harmony kind of thing. One of the songs I want to do is Frampton's "All I Want to Be Is By Your Side." I remember the concert last fall when the whole hall was singing along at the top of their lungs.

We get our official start on the 19th of April at a small music festival featuring local artists. Acoustic guitar, bass, and four voices for now. We will likely add a second guitarist to fill things out a bit.

James Taylor and His Band of Legends

I saw him Wednesday night in Raleigh; the third show on this tour. He and this hand-picked band recorded a live CD of cover tunes back in January which is due out later in the year. This is very different for him - not playing covers, but having an album full of them.

The band is huge - 12 players including JT. Among them are drummer Steve Gadd, a VERY well known and versatile session drummer that I remember from his brilliant performance on Steely Dan's "Aja;" and "Blue Lou" Marini of Blues Brothers fame (who now looks like Albert Einstein).

They played a lot of the covers - probably 8-10 tunes. The best of them was "Wichita Lineman," and old Glenn Campbell tune. There were a couple of really sleepy ones I could have done without, including "On Broadway" by the Drifters, which NOBODY does better than George Benson (nobody).

There was a good mix of his old favorites and some of his recent stuff, but some tunes were noticeably absent, like "Fire and Rain."

Lots of interaction with the audience (which he has always done - such a goof). He even added a song to his set list by request of a lady in the front ("Mighty Storm"). Three encore reappearances, the first of which he spent time on his knees at the edge of the stage signing autographs. He is a class act.

Honestly, I enjoyed him better when I saw him in 1990 in Vermont. There was more of his own stuff, the venue was tiny, and he played for us in the steady light rain. The arrangements with the big band are cool though, and Steve Gadd just plain kicks ass.

A few years ago, my wife and I went to se the 'Moody Blues'. My wife keeps a camera with her... where ever we go. During the concert, we were in the very front row. My wife was taking pictures of the band and the flautist stopped playing and posed! It was the funniest thing I'd ever seen. After the flash wen-off, he bowed deeply and went back to playing!

Frampton - yet another rocker from my home town, along with David Bowie and Bill Wyman!

We also claim H.G. Wells and Charles Darwin, but they weren't musically inclined.

You mentioned Bill Wyman. In his book: 'Stone Alone', he often mentions his encounters with 'young' girls. From his own description, they all sound as though they were 'under-age'. How, did the guy avoid 'charges'? :D
He said himself, he left the Stones because he hated flying. What a shame.
