Get Avast Free Edition from
www.avast.com

The amazing thing is that it blocks viruses better than Norton 360, in many of the www.av-comparatives.org tests. There's also AVG's own free edition. Reviews:
http://www.consumersearch.com/www/software/antivirus-software/alwil-avast-home-edition-4-7.html
http://www.cnet.com.au/software/security/0,239029558,339283664,00.htm

As you can see, the reviews are very good even for this free software.

Some virus-protection makers have basic free editions for personal use, as a method of free advertising for their more expensive products.

You should also install Microsoft's free Defender software too, to block spyware. So that you have both a virus scanner and a spyware blocker.

Don't bother buying crappy old Norton 360 when there's a better free scanner. There are others that are even better than both, but costs money. For your mother, a good free scanner is probably all she needs.

easier doing remote admin on ms products than teaching the previous generation *nix.
:P:D:D:D

AVG from Grisoft.
:P

That is what she has and it is expiring. That is why I offered to buy her one - but she won't accept . . . she wants to get a free one.

You don't need to learn anything about *nix to use Mac OS X.:P

That option would be a little more expensive than a pack of software.B|

I definitely recommend AVG. On top of that, download SpyBot and/or AdAware to find and delete spyware. Both programs are also free, and don't clutter your computer.

Don't put too much weight in those av-comparatives.org tests. Working in the industry they are a joke for the most part. Every vendor does things differently and as such ones default settings are often too lax or strict for normal useage and as such they get better or worse scores depending on if they want usability or high test score. I've been trying to educate people for years on some of this stuff, if you want details PM me.

AVG works fine for most users that are only online every few days and not realy surfing that bad of sites. What they are missing is an Adware/spyware blocking and registry cleaning component also. Yeah, their normal sigs work ok but they miss a lot of cookies and browser hijacks.

Get an AV, a Firewall and a Malware blocker.

True, but if you REALLY loved your mother....:P

(I just refuse to use any OS that requires the immediate application of 3rd-party products to deal with the flaws. It's like buying a new car, then needing to apply duct-tape, bondo, and install missing bolts.)

Isn't AVG renewable for free on an annual basis, by opting out of the higher-end paid version when renewing?

Avast allows me to renew for free every year. It is the only time that it 'advertises' the opportunity to upgrade to Professional, but I can elect to stay on the free version.

That. Download AVG, SpyBot, AdAware, and ZoneAlarm for her, enable the auto-update on AVG, give the necessary permissions in ZoneAlarm, and call it good.

Get her windows defender.

It's free.
It works pretty well to spamish popups.
It doesn't slow your machine down like those poor quality mcafee and norton products.

You might get firefox installed on her machine, getting her off of IE.

The latest version of AVG is capable of this also.
I'm pretty impressed with their latest version, especially for a free product. I also don't really care to have 6 different apps to cover all these things...AVG covers them all in one and is automated.
