Shotgun 1 #1 May 14, 2008 Anyone have any suggestions for good places to go camping in SoCal? Preferably near water (ocean, lake, or river) and hiking trails.

downwardspiral 0 #3 May 14, 2008 Big bear lake is a possibility but its not real the SoCal atmosphere. I don't know of any beaches you could pitch a tent on for the night tho. Perhaps this will help... http://www.daytrippen.com/southern-california-beach-camping.htmlwww.FourWheelerHB.com

Naomi 0 #10 May 14, 2008 Pismo is beautiful, especially when the Monarch butterflies are there. My favorite place in all of California is Big Sur. There are lots of campgrounds there too. jmp2liv 0 #14 May 14, 2008 Lake Casitas is awesome for camping, and if you like disc golf the course is amazing. But, just fyi, they don't allow swimming in the lake. It's a drinking water source for some cities in SoCal (Ventura). Strange that they allow power boats on the lake though....

Sebazz1 2 #17 May 14, 2008 Ther is a great little camp ground I've camped at over the years in Perris Valley, CA. There's a little pool about a 5 minute walk away and you can hear otters playing all day! I don't know So Cal well but I did go to college in Santa Barabara and I remember camping at some pretty awesome and amazing places in the mountains behind Santa Barbara. I'm certain there's some good camping along the coast immediately north and south of Santa Barbara too. But once you get north of SB you aint really So. cal anymore to my opinion. Pismo is fun and Big Sur is magical.

But I have a summer semester starting on the 9th, and I'm not so sure that attending a wine festival the day before is a good idea. (Being the lush that I am.) Shotgun 1 #22 May 15, 2008 I'm looking at Lake Arrowhead now - never been up there. It's only about 1 1/2 hours from our house, so I'm liking that. It looks like we can camp at Silverwood Lake or Lake Arrowhead in that area. Do you have any idea which one is better, or where the best campgrounds are? Big Sur sounds nice too, if we want to drive a bit further. I don't think I want to go to any of those no-body-contact lakes. We have our boat on one of those (Diamond Valley), and I am SO frustrated with not being able to jump in the freakin' water when it's hot!

NoShitThereIWas 0 #25 May 15, 2008 There are a ton of places to camp all up and down the Pacific Coast. Up North you have the entire Ventana Wilderness and can hike up to 100 foot waterfalls (Berry Creek Falls) which is one of my favorite hikes. It is a long one though. There are some awesome State Parks right on the beach or right across from it. When I lived in SoCAl I used to camp a lot south of the border but Twin Lakes, Big Bear and Mono Lake are also nice. Check out the State Park guide online. I think you can even make reservations there.Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say."
