ntrprnr 0 #1 June 2, 2008 Hey gang... Any military types here ever hear of the National Defense University? www.ndu.edu? Been asked to speak there next week on new media and social media... They're asking for my ssn, among other things, so figured I'd ask here before I replied. They seem legit, just wanted to confirm before I head to DC. Anyone? Thanks. :-) Peter_______________ "Why'd you track away at 7,000 feet?" "Even in freefall, I have commitment issues."
ryoder 1,590 #2 June 2, 2008 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Defense_University Funny that although I hadn't heard of it, I had heard of the National War College which is a part of it."There are only three things of value: younger women, faster airplanes, and bigger crocodiles" - Arthur Jones. SARLDO 0 #3 June 2, 2008 Yep, heard of it as a place to gain JPME but that's all I know."Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest" ~Samuel Clemens MB#4300 Dudeist Skydiver #
BPilk 0 #4 June 2, 2008 There is a national defense college, but why they would need your SSN is beyond me...if they've asked for you to speak, then there's no need to verify your credentials... A lot of companies like BOA, (Bank of America) are puttin out APB to its customers due to individuals perpetrating like their from BOA and asking for personal information. My advice would be not to give it out, if anything ask for theirs and verify if its correct. my two cents!"Never take life seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway." jtval 0 #6 June 2, 2008 I can see them wanting to verify your background but I also FIRMLY envoke the POIA of 1974 As one said if THEY'VE asked you they shouldnt need to verify your background that deeply. I dont know about the NDU but I bet if you ask for their SSN just so you could be sure your speaking with a legit organization they'd laugh. My photos My Videos
Icon134 0 #7 June 3, 2008 I do know about the NDU and they are a legitimate organization but I'd still be reluctant to give them your SSN. I hate to say it but JT is right again... quote the privacy Act... and suggest that they verify your identy by some other means... especially since they contacted you. They obviously know who you are. ScottLivin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
warpedskydiver 0 #8 June 3, 2008 Go in there and fill out the forms If they really wanted to, they would have gotten your SSN from the IRS or FBI They want to get your number to fill out forms, that is why, and to verify that you are NOT a shitbird. They're asking for my ssn, among other things, so figured I'd ask here before I replied. They seem legit, just wanted to confirm before I head to DC. Anyone? Thanks. :-) Peter Some have had some valid points about privacy, etc. However, I do have one question: are you being paid for your time there (that can be one reason they'll want and need your SSN)? Also, you'll be on a military base, and you are under a different set of rules. Privacy protection is not a priority and you can be sure there is no such protection while you are on the grounds. Also, because of some of the training that goes on in these schools, TS clearance is required and therefore assets there are treated as senstive, etc. Of course, you can always ask them why you need to provide your SSN (especially if you're not being compensated), on the pretense you're simply protecting your own information (a valid point considering occasional breaches in govt info, etc).So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light!
