It finally has GPS, which I thought was an unforgivable omission from the original.

Actual GPS, or 'faux-GPS' from cell phone tower signals? (I can't see any of the vids, so...)

All the apple resellers have a box that is not allowed to be opened until June 10th. That is today. The new store opens in 9 days so it should be on sale pretty soon here.

Apparently there is no contract lock in on them eeither.

Not from what I could see on the tech spec page, unless there's something I missed (entirely possible). I don't see any reference to a GPS chip, only to "Assisted GPS", which could be either positioning via cell tower signals alone, or in combination with an internal GPS.

Apparently, Steve was reading my previous post. LOL. I can see him stewing somewhere in Cupertino ... "ooooohhhh, I'm gonna show that Riddler" :D

The biggest improvement will be not paying $500 for one of these. Too bad I got a second one in February >:( The second biggest is using 3G - the iPhone data is unforgiveably slow. The true GPS is a bonus. With these additions, plus the announcement that the iPhone firmware 2.0 will have true A2DP, the iPhone is looking to edge out over the Blackberry to become the better of the two. Blackberry keyboards will always be better than a touchscreen, though.

My Blackberry has a GPS chip, and the stupid carrier (Verizon) disabled it, so they can sell a $10/month triangulation service that works half the time. :S>:(

So basically Apple released a phone with the technology that was already old when the first version came out. He took everyone for a ride at $399 and now is going to get all the fanboys to drop another huge chunk of change to get slightly up to date with the rest of the smartphone crowd. Oh ya, then there is the increase AT&T is including with the phone plan if you upgrade to 2.0.

Meanwhile, I've had all the same technology on my phone for the last 2.5 years at a cheaper cost and a cheaper phone plan. Having real GPS in my phone over the last year has been a very nice thing at times. Plus full native support of all Adobe and MS document formats. Also, full support of every IM client and google mail, yahoo mail, hotmail and full Exchange Enterprise integration.

If you want to toss out the 16gb of memory for music an iTunes support, go ahead. I prefer my $14/month subscription to Zune that allows me to download as many songs as I want. I've already downloaded 7000 songs from Zune in three months! Outside of that, I could care less about portable gaming.

As its press release made clear, it’s going to make up for that by raising the $20 monthly fee customers pay for unlimited data services to $30. That works out to $240 extra over the life of a two-year contract.

“Half the price,” it turns out, is actually $40 more.

So, you will be paying more for v2.0, $40 more over the length of the contract.

Ok - now go to the SPECS page for the new phone and find the reference to WHAT gps chip is in it...or did you not actually read my post? All it says in regard to the GPS is "Assisted GPS", which covers a wide psectrum. Apparently, it actually does have a GPS chip in it - good. It should have had one from the beginning.

What I found more interesting about yesterday's keynote was the announcement of Snow Leopard, the next version of OS X.

No new user features!

They are going to make under the hood improvements to make better use of multicore chips and REDUCE the footprint of OS X to make it more efficient and reliable.

I think that is an excellent move....concentrating on improving a good OS instead of adding more complexity/features.

From Macrumors.com......
Apple has posted pages for Mac OS X Snow Leopard for both server and client and describe a bit of what users can expect from the next OS X release. Apple promises that Snow Leopard "dramatically reduces the footprint of Mac OS X, making it even more efficient for users, and giving them back valuable hard drive space for their music and photos." Some early screenshots from the Developer seed of Snow Leopard do indeed show significantly smaller application file sizes over current Leopard installations. Other features listed on Apple's site were largely touched on in the press release.

The New York Times, however, reveals that Snow Leopard's big focus is taking advantage of the recent trend towards multi-core and parallel computer processes. Steve Jobs provided some information on Apple's direction:
"We've added over a thousand features to Mac OS X in the last five years," he said Monday in an interview after his presentation. "We’re going to hit the pause button on new features."
....
“The way the processor industry is going is to add more and more cores, but nobody knows how to program those things,” he said. “I mean, two, yeah; four, not really; eight, forget it.”

According to Jobs, Apple has made a parallel-programming breakthrough. Specifically, Apple claims their new "Grand Central" technology is "way beyond what Nvidia or anyone else has." There had been talk from Nvidia's CEO that Apple may adopt their CUDA technology, but it appears that Apple's implementation may be more advanced. CUDA allows programmers to offload processing to the computer's graphics processors, which can be very powerful.

Apple's focus on parallel computing comes at a natural time with Intel upcoming plans for Nehalem processors which will scale up to 8-core processors. Apple has announced that Snow Leopard will be delivered in "about a year".
